Today's games compared to us

Anyone watch them? Even though were competing against these sides its great to watch teams that are tough, consistent and hard nosed. Storm, Dogs and Souths are for mine morals to fight it out for the competition, they look light years ahead in some respects.. Even watching them at half time you can see every single one of them is switched on to what their coaches are saying. Very intense coaches, that demand excellence. Of course you have to have the troops to execute the plan. Their teams generally go out there and you can see hem going through their game plan consistently over the 80 minutes. Relentlessly and without fuss. They generally don't have big patches of inconsistent football which have plauged us for years.

Watch the first 30 minutes of the Dogs and Souths game. Just about every single kick on the 5th play finds the turf and rolls inside the 10 metre line. Precision and discipline. I here you say you needa massive pack? Well Souths do, but Melbourne and the Dogs don't and they still get to their spots and are much better organised in gaining a territorial advantage through the kicking game. Even the bombs land 5 metres out or near the goal line every single time. Set completions were over 90% for both sides. Souths forward pack is one of the best I have seen in years. They smashed the Dogs up front and it was only the Dogs grit and courage which kept it from being a complete blow out

It's good to watch a side that is so well drilled at getting to their spots and finding the right time to play their trick shots. The precision of Cronk, Slater and Smith in their set plays is just outstanding. They will have a field day against us. One slight positive is Melbourne looked quite weak defending in the forwards tonight. Brisbane made a lot of inroads up the middle, however they had some size to make the impact.

Anyway not being negative, just saying I enjoyed watching teams working through a plan for 80 minutes. Teams that look like they demand excellence. Maybe we can get there one day, but i reckon you need a combination of speed, size and precision and that's why these 3 teams will blow us off the park this year.
 
Potter is doing exactly that i believe, instilling the kind of drive and discipline that the likes of Belammy and Hasler do. BUT IT WILL TAKE TIME.

I read an article about how each week we will remember what potsy has instilled for a bit longer, i've talked of this before, and that seems to be the case. Round 1, 10min? Round 2, 20-30min, Round 3 30-40min. Round 4 32min before farah came off and against a MUCH tougher side and with some bad luck as far as getting points (the kick, moltz's try etc.)

Sure, potter will make mistakes, it's a brand new team and he's a rookie coach. Cut him the same slack you cut teddy. If he makes them again and again….then we can get worried.

I think by round 18, this forum will be singing a very different tune because we'll be playing like we did in the first half against eels for 80min against top 4 sides and occasionally coming away with wins once some youngsters are a bit more experienced and props are back.
 
Potter has no chance with this current side to beat any top teams believe me. We do not have the size, the speed, the precision or the culture of winning. We will have a few nice wins against fellow also rans however it will take 2-3 for Potter to get rid of some of the dead wood and recruit smartly. He was left with a playing roster and players mindset in as bad a shape as it has been for a decade. We have not adapted to the way the modern game has been played for years and have been reliant on brilliant individual players to pull out wins.

By mid next season I hope Potter is starting to make some inroads into selecting a balanced side. He is taking the slowly, slowly approach for the minute because basically his hands are tied with the lack of balance in the roster. You can't be competative against these top sides with a fullback that runs for 20 metres, a non dominant half, an undersized forward pack and a lack of aggression.
 
Yep they sure are very well drilled outfits and light years ahead of teams like ours at this stage. I'm actually thinking of leaving the country when we play Souths - can't bear to look.
 
Souths are without doubt the worst match up for us in the competition. Im not exaggerating when I say the style they play they will put 50 on the Tigers. Against the Storm, we generally go ok because they are a bit lighter and rely more on precision and brilliance then sheer power and size.
 
Might as well forfeit against the Storm. We will get belted and kept to 0 again.

The structure, discipline, professionalism, class and attitude of today's sides are daylights compared to the Tigers. I just can't believe how stagnant we are as a club. It's the same old.

I think we will be lucky to fight off the spoon this year. I'm not fickle, just being realistic.
 
I was in awe watching that 1st game today. Both teams played outstanding football. Like Eddie I am petrified at what Souths may do to us if they turn up in a mood. The power they have through the middle is scary and they just keep rolling forward all game. I will never forget that day at the SCG that they towelled us up by 50 in 2010 and our roster that day was much stronger than what we have this year.

We could discuss ways of how we can turn things around and analyze things to death but at the end of the day we're only re-arranging the deck chairs on the titanic. The fact is we aren't good enough to be a factor this yr. We'll have our moments with a couple big wins, but we aren't going to get near the top sides

Yes, if you watched the Souths game today, you would notice that McGuire dropped Crocker as captain and made him 18th man

And last week, he dropped Roy Asatasi as captain

He plays the best players, and drops the out of form.

Let's see if Potter will do that. What's the chances Benji gets dropped? Or even Lawrence? Ayshford?

When you have the calibre of player to replace them then yeah it's a great idea.
In saying that, Potter subs Farah due to fatigue and people go mental (even myself). I don't think it applies to us as much as it does to other teams.
Souths could drop any back and Inglis could fill it!
In general I think the amount of players off contract at the end of the year is of benefit to Potter. Still hard to tell where we stand in the competition atm. Had we not been penalized for 2 or so tries and disallowed 2 of theirs (definitely could have been the case) would people still think so low of us?
I think Melbourne will show more where we stand over all in decent conditions. I hope the Storm bring a decent game and we match it, that would make me very happy - don't get me wrong I'd love to see us demolish them, this would make me happy but not in the same way. Playing in Melbourne adds more to the challenge though…
I don't think anyone is invincible as of yet. Some very close games against teams who were considered bottom 4 and top teams. It's anyone's comp at the moment although Melbourne/Souths seem to be the early winners and Dragons/Warriors the early losers.

Souths fans have waited decades to see them play like they do… Storm like. Its taken a while but they have certainly got to a new (and consistent level) shame WT (bar 2005) made up of TWO foundation clubs who also struggled for many years cannot reach such levels (consistently)

It was a terrific game of footy, both games really….but Souths & Dogs were impressive....minimal errors, few stoppages
Both clubs doing well off field too...40,000 members between them, over 50,000 at the game yesterday....they gotta be applauded.

It would be fantastic to be able pick players to suit different situations / game plans every week that were quality players

Unfortunately I can't see us in that situation for a fair few years yet
 
Why do you think the bunnies are going so well? Because they got rid of their flashy half who tries toomany low percentage plays and plays for hhimself. And replaced him with a half who's game is solid all round. Exactly what we need to do.

And yet Benji did exactly that against Manly and he cops it on here. Miller didn't really stuff anything up either.

I think your analysis is wrong as well. I think you need halves that can create something and run the ball. Of course you need to minimise errors but all players make mistakes even Johns and Lockyer. I think Benji needs to run it more - apart from that he has been fine.
 
Bellamy,Hasler or Bennett, could coach our roster and nothing much would change, basically we have a mix of reserve graders,youngster and the odd bit of class.

Till we get a team with the required forward strength we are going nowhere. Its very simple, the writing has been on the wall for a few years. Sheens recruitment was poor.

Iam still willing to cut them a little slack, no other team has lost four of their front rowers, so I will wait to the end of the season and see how they have progressed before I make to much of a judgement.
 
Supercoach none of the coaches you mentioned would have signed Fulton to a three year deal. People can blame the Roster yet Potter is picking the same team as Sheens. How anyone can pick Masada before Ava jut about does my head in.
