Detective Inspector Chris Ahern said police understand six people, including a woman released from jail today and the crash victim, were involved in two verbal altercations near the prison.
"We think the deceased was attending the correctional centre on the day the woman was being released, along with these other people," he said.
"We're trying to investigate how all these people know each other and what went on here this morning."
The motorcyclist, a 28-year-old Bracalba man, was reportedly there to collect the woman being released from the jail.
According to police, after the altercations he got on his motorbike and rode about three kilometres southbound along Nerang-Murwillumbah Road before crashing.
He sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.
Investigations are ongoing into whether a Toyota sedan was involved in the crash.
