THE NRL pocketed $1 billion from the television deal this week but ignored the wishes of its own fans on a number of issues.

Almost 60 per cent of participants in The Daily Telegraph's survey wanted State of Origin switched to be played on stand-alone weekends.

And so did the game's leading players headed by Johnathan Thurston and Cameron Smith, who are concerned about burnout and backing up for their club teams 48 hours later.

The fans are fed up with the unlevel playing field created by mid-season, midweek games.

Some teams have to play in split rounds without their Origin stars while others are at full strength.

Some clubs contribute more than six players to Origin, others none.

Only 35 per cent of fans wanted league's biggest event of the year to remain on Wednesday nights.
