LIVE GAME Trial 1 v Manly

Live Game Discussion
It was only a trial and last year it has to be remembered we put 50 on Manly in the corresponding game last year, than went on to have a shocker of a year.

Although in saying the above, there was very little in the way of positives to come out of the game as far as looking ahead. Personally I saw a team that lacks quality right across the park, no game breakers and very little speed.

Anyway looking forward to seeing what differenceHastings and Laurie will make
The lack of quality and game breakers is the key, said to the missus a few of these young guys need to leap off the screen. No one did. Dillon looked like there was a hope but Laurie has that spot to lose.

Agree - forget the second half it was just throw as many possibles on the field to see who might go on with the job. The first half where both sides had pretty much their top 17 on the park was a lot closer than the 3 tries to 1 suggests. In the first half i thought our attack was structured ok, our defence was solid but our kicking once again was ordinary. Apart from the sloppy middle defence to let Turbo setup their third try i thought we more than matched with their top 17.
The 40 /20 by DCE and TT 's involvement in the 3rd try key plays made by key players.

In the game before, Canberra had a couple of kids in the spine who looked the real deal, yet we keep talking junior pathways and none of our kids seem to be able to make that big step from juniors to NRL.

Early days but it is hard to see where the wins will come from

Trials give you no momentum. They aren’t designed for that. They are purely there for players to blow the cobwebs out and maybe look at combinations. No team goes into round 1 thinking they have momentum from their form
Maybe momentum was the wrong word, but confidence is the right word, as otherwise for them it will be just a continuation of last years poor form, winning one of these trials will give them some CONFIDENCE

Logan looked good. Pauga has really transformed his body still has some D issues but was a point of difference out there. Twal and offa looked good. Full strength side looked ok

Couple of things.
I was happy with the kids for the first 10 or 15, many are still babies silly to judge them when they smashed everything in their path last year.

Dillon could stake a claim he MUST attack the ball in the next trial. The obstruction call was correct, but when he put Nofo in you saw the difference between what we've had running around recently and a genuine threat. Been a LOOOONG time since we've had that.

First half was fine apart from the same old right hand defence. Yes we were clunky, but honestly we put 50 on Manly last year and that didn't do us much good. Contrary to many I thought the various halves were OK for large parts, but looked poor later in the game.

I thought gildart and to'a could have got more ball.

At this stage, if Madge is serious about winning tough Nofo has to be under pressure. You can't play conservative with the ball and then gift a try or two every week.

Canberra have been breeding the tougher for a while now.

Know what u mean our up and coming looked way off.

I don’t even know if confidence is the right word either. I remember in 2011 being at Ctown watching them play against Parra. I was convinced after that game they were wooden spooners. They ended up in the top 4.

They have just come from a year from hell (2021) bad publicity all around the place, purported problems with the coach etc etc etc, so a bit of confidence now wouldn't do any harm I think !!

In the cold light of day I’m not slitting my wrists The NRL team score Wes 4-12 against running into a stiff breeze ..

should have been 8-12.. no way Foran stops that No TRY even with no so called obstruction..

Peachey, To’a, Tuilagi, Gildart we’re good..

best take on the second 40 Simpkins on good on an edge..Rua a prospect..

Standing behind the posts for both games last night one thing that is more evident to me ,more than anything else is we are horribly slow in the middle third . We don’t get to our spots quick enough and in defence we are terrible at a and b and tying in. And when we do tie in, we can’t cover the edge on the next play cause we haven’t got the leg speed to get back and push again. I honestly believe we need to rethink the our leg speed policy when it come to future purchases in the forwards. Dillon made one poor decision which is he stands to far back while defending, that’s why he was out on the first bomb that floated. He is first grade level in attack now, but as I said , some time in reserves honing his defence and positioning when we are tacking is very important. Toa I thought was ok and is obviously very versatile, madden I’m not a fan off, I think he’s the modern day Kevin Moore. Anyway with Laurie back next week and roberts and Hastings, you will get a better indication of how we are travelling

I totally get if people want to be worried given what happened last year. There’s been no suggestion at all over the off season that we are going to improve. Apart from maybe the Cowboys, we‘re the least attractive looking side in the comp with no significant improvements made to our roster.

My wrists are intact but only due to low expectations. For us to have any success this year a group of guys will need to prove they are better than your average FGer. Last night nobody proved that, hopefully it’s a more determined effort against the Rortsters.

And even then the Turbo try was just Turbo being Turbo. We’re not the last side he will burn this year.
One of the big differences between the two side is football smarts - You could see Turbo and DCE lining up that play - LL got sucked in and rushed out to stop DCE who just neatly turned it back inside to Turbo who went straight through the gaping hole our markers left as Mikaele didn't follow LL across to close the gap. Also the second try - once again DCE gets a 40/20 then on the first play he knows we are a man down in the line and knows Nofo will rush in to cover it so he immediately switches the attack on the first tackle and the winger strolls in. We just don't have those players who read a game and quickly take advantage of whats on offer.

We need to win the trials to give us a bit of momentum, and confidence before tackling the season proper
The next trial is more important, I don't think you'll see to many of those 'young boys' next trial.
Only players like Dillon will get a run.

After watching that I backed us to win the spoon.

Gil dart had limited involvement, but didn’t get run over as I was fearing. Tuilagi & Luci were the best forwards and they will be playing elsewhere next year.

Toa looked promising.

Peachey helps the attack, but is a defensive liability in an already soft middle.

Every other outside back I saw take the field was terrible and not up to first grade standard. Tupou and Pauga just can’t tackle.

Laurie, Hastings and big Ken aren’t going to fox the steaming pile that was the tigers last night.

Mikaele looks good taking the hit ups, outside of that he is a terribly lazy footballer.

I think winning 5 games this year is no given

Hey did someone go off injured in second half? Was it Rua? I was there but happened on the other side of field from me

Thats right. 30-0 if i remember correctly. My Parra supporting mates were giving it to me. Top 4 for us, missed the 8 for them.
