Wests Tigers have stepped up their attempts to replace James Tedesco by holding talks with Tui Lolohea on the same day their fullback confirmed he would join the Sydney Roosters next season.
The Roosters yesterday announced Tedesco had signed a four-year deal with the club, his signature likely to prompt the departure of several of their existing stars.
At the same time, the Tigers have intensified their efforts to sign Lolohea. The New Zealand Warriors utility is in Sydney with the Tongan team and it is understood he used his day off to meet Tigers officials to discuss a move to the club, having been given permission by the Warriors to explore his options for next season.
The Tigers could yet look to sign Lolohea before the June 30 deadline, a move that would allow the club to release Parramatta-bound Mitchell Moses ahead of schedule.
The Tigers have earmarked Lolohea as a key targets as they look to strengthen the squad next season in the absence of Tedesco, Moses and captain Aaron Woods.
Tedesco was the last member of the so-called big four to determine his future, his deal with the Roosters casting doubt over a handful of the Bondi Junction club’s existing backline. The Roosters are yet to sign Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Blake Ferguson and Michael Gordon.
Kenny-Dowall has held talks with Newcastle, Ferguson is another Tigers target and Gordon is weighing up whether to remain at the Roosters and spend next season on the wing.
The Tigers and Eels have also sounded out Roosters utility Connor Watson about a mid-season move, although he told The Australian he had given little thought to leaving the Roosters this year.
“To be honest, I haven’t heard too much,” Watson said. “A few mates have been asking me — fans of the Tigers. I haven’t really spoken to Robbo (coach Trent Robinson) about it. I have come through the system at the Roosters and I love the club.
“It’s a thing where I think I have to bide my time, especially because I am under contract for the next two years. That is my focus at the moment.”
The Tigers did their best to retain Tedesco but were unable to convince him to ignore the Roosters. “I’m sure this decision hasn’t been made lightly by James, and while it will be disappointing to see him leave at season’s end, we will continue to provide him with all the support he needs,” chief executive Justin Pascoe said.
While the Roosters are likely to sacrifice some of backline talent at the end of the year, they will also be without forward Kane Evans after he confirmed he had signed a three-year deal with Parramatta.
“The Roosters have played such a huge part in helping me become the man I am today and I’ll be eternally grateful to Robbo (coach Trent Robinson), the players and all the staff at the club for that,” Evans said.
“Looking ahead, I’m pleased to have my future sorted out, but for now, I’m just determined to give my all for the rest of the season.”
