BENJI Marshall or Darren Lockyer? C'mon, who do you pick? And quick … the clock is ticking.

Well, it should be ticking. And would be if those in charge of the NRL All Stars realised the one serious flaw in their otherwise crackin' concept - the automatic selection of Marshall and Lockyer as rival Test captains.

See, of all the jerseys up for grabs in this Australian Idol for mungos, none is capable of causing more debate, controversy or internet traffic to NRL.com than that of the All Stars No. 6.

It's Australia versus New Zealand. Sydney versus Brisbane. The young buck up against the balding great.

Hell, throw reigning Dally M star Todd Carney into the mix and you've got the most gripping popularity contest since Big Brother went all turkey slappin'.

So why can't fans vote on it? Moreover, why would league officialdom not want us arguing over exactly who is the most popular playmaker - indeed, the most popular player - in the game?

Sure, Marshall may be the best footballer in the world right now.

A sidesteppin' superstar who owned the Four Nations final and then won the Golden Boot after a staggering 11 of 13 judges awarded him maximum points. But is Benji the most beloved?

Has he done enough to usurp the Brisbane boy who this year could surpass those record Origin appearances of Alfie Langer, record finals appearances of Kevvie Walters and record premiership games of Terry Lamb and Steve Menzies?

It's an important question because the All Stars concept, remember, is all about those who mean most to the man on the hill. For proof, check out workaholic Eel Nathan Hindmarsh - currently leading his back-row category some two years after Australian selectors discarded him.

The automatic selection of Lockyer and Marshall also robs fans of the chance to vote on undoubtedly the game's most popular players - halfbacks. Instead of NSW Origin star Mitchell Pearce pushing for selection, Marshall will assume the halfback role some 18 months after his own club Wests Tigers gave up the very same experiment.

It's madness. A glitch even Wayne Bennett hinted at this week when, blogging on the NRL website, a punter asked the All Stars coach what lessons he had taken from last year's fixture.

That I don't like talking to the TV at halftime, he wrote. And that Benji is more of a five-eighth than a halfback.

According to Fox Sports Statistics, Wests Tigers win a paltry 44 per cent of games with Marshall in the seven jersey. When he shifts a spot wider, however, that number lifts to a solid 63 per cent - the type of statistic Marshall fans should be using in their argument against Lockyer.

I would think at this time of there careers, Lockyer is pretty well suited to halfback rather than 5/8\. I'd actually look at switching him there to prolong his career if i was Henjak

i disagree sirro, lockyer has always played very sideways, he doesnt lke playing straight at all. he would be a terrible halfback imo. benji basically played halfback for us this year. he played up the middle and right whilst lui stuck strictly to the left.

If your picking the side on form its simple.
Tigers made the semi finals last year. Broncos did not.
Marshall led Kiwis to win the Four Nations, While IMO Lockyer struggled through the Kangaroos campaign.
Marshall wins Golden Boot.
I'm not bagging Lockyer but you would have to say Marshall has the current form on the board.

I see this as a great opportunity for Benji… Benji is getting a chance to play alongside the next Immortal. I'm presumming Bennett will play Lockyer Right and Benji Left, much like the way Queensland plays.

If Benji is smart, he will realise the little things that Darren does which makes him so good, bring them back to the Tigers and help in developing his own game.

Benji's time will come!

I'm a die hard Queenslander and Lockyer is a special player but nowhere near an Immortal quality player and gets way too much credit because he has been in such strong teams. If he had played in a weaker team he would have been shown up alot more. Benji is already a better 5/8 than Lockyer and still has a few more years of improving. I think it's great they get to play together though and will be great to see Benji become the captain of the All-stars in years to come once Lockyer retires.

I think yet another Qlder in Mal is next in line for Immortal status Watto - but Lockyer will get there (hopefully ahead of Joey) due to the individual records he had broken along with his teams' achievements!

The words Great and Immortal are distributed way to loosely these days.

Locky is no where near that.

lol… It must be hard for the NSW diehards to acknowledge how great some players are North of the Border, considering NSW hasnt produced a Great or Immortal since the early 70's...

The closest NSW has come will be Brad Fittler, but I dont think it will happen now considering how high Locky has raised the bar...

I'll be polite and get us back on subject…

Unfortunately, Joey is probably one of the greatest CLUB Footballers we have ever seen. Joey and Stirling are probably equals in that regard, but Joeys stats don't come close to that of DL's on the National Stage...

I'm hoping Benji learns plenty from DL, and is the catalyst of our season, delivering our second Premiership in 7 years...

Watto stats suck. Stats dont show that Chris Anderson cruelled Andrew Johns for years at rep level cos of his love affair with Kimmorley. Stats dont show that Johns carried us in the 95 world cup defending at hooker and then taking on the key playmaking role in attack allowing Toovey a free ride in rep footy. He did the same at Origin level at that time and his defence was stuff of legend, and it seemed the more defence he did, the more he was in the game in attack, he thrived on the challenge. He came back later in his career to dominate again at origin level wearing the 7\. He's a great, no doubt about it.

KS - it was actually more Bozo who cruelled Joey's Australian & NSW prospects at no. 7 (as both Coach for Aus & NSW selector) due to his love affair with Toovey!!!

(Fulton was Australian coach in 95 + an Aus/NSW selector until 2011… - Anderson was a Ribot/SL convert at both Canterbury & then Melbourne and played no part in Origin since his playing days)!!!

Joey, Fittler, Brasher, Dymock & Jason Smith won Australia the 1995 WC!!!!

No Brash - no World Cup!!!

Nah i mean after the period where Joey was wearing the 9 and Toovey the 7\. I actaully think Bozo's love affair with Toovey made Joey a better player.

Don't disagree KS - but it did prevent Joey from wracking up the stats as NSW or Aus no. 7 - and making a greater name for himself that way!

I could cop him playing behind Langer for a couple of years - but playing in the front line defensively when sporting the 9 jumper - while Tooves played attacking dummy-half was an exercise in loyalty & ego-management that eventually blunted him when he should have been at his best!

Those back/kneck/knee injuries may have been preventable - via better management!!
