now, he is a classic example of sheer determination.
he got in and had a go.

don't forget eddie the eagle from winter olympics.

there are many wonderful atheletes male and female, who compete in any type of sport.
so there will be many varying opinions.

Or Tim Moltzen

Sorry, cycling is not a proper sport IMO. And to suggest that the chemist on wheels Armstrong is the greatest athlete of all time is the most absurd thing I have ever heard…..ever.

Not a big basketball follower these days but IMO the greatest athlete of all time has to be michael Jordan .
Changed the sport
Changed sponsorships in sport
Put Nike on another level worldwide
Has his own clothing line
His own shoe line ( still available now )
His own acronym , MJ
Was one of the most recognizable ppl in the world
Was the highest paid sportsman at the time
Was just an all round freak

Seems a lot of people are impressed by tall guys running up and down a tiny court ,while not being allowed to be stopped, and jumping about 6inches in the air to put a ball in a hoop.
Its so hard both teams can do it about 80- 90 times each every game.

Why not? have you seen any of the tour de France? It requires skill, speed, power, endurance, tactics, courage and a toughness - both physical and mental not seen in most other sports.

How does any of those reasons you listed make him the greatest ATHLETE ever? They make him a good sportsman and businessman…none of them suggest anything towards his athleticism.

Saying Bradman is one of the best athletes ever is ridiculous. He was an amazing cricketer, the best ever no doubt but cricketers aren't athletes, they're sportsmen

Surprised no one has mentioned Messi yet, although he is another who is more a sportsman than an athlete, however he does deserve to be here. Very fast and incredibly strong for a bloke his size (the way he can go through defenders much bigger than him is incredible) and he is also extremely agile and leaves blokes for dead left right and centre.

One things the basketballers do have in their favour over most football codes is in basketball there is next to no stoppages and the game is very fast, apart from time outs and free throws the longest stoppage you will get in a quarter is 5 seconds max. No like the rugby codes where the ball goes out and you can wait a minute to get it back in again, or have a 2-3 minute stoppage after a try. When I started playing indoor soccer (which is similar, apart from goals there is no stoppages), that was one of the first things I realised about how tough the game was.

Talking to a mate's sister and she is convinced equestrian is a harder "sport" than triathlon. Anyone else agree or can we all say that's a ridiculous statement?
