Utai...one lucky guy!!!

I have been thinking about the selection of Utai for RD1 and the more I think about it the harder I find it to reconcile the decision. How would Mitch Brown or Geoff Daniella feel?..Both these players had outstanding form during 2010 yet they find themselves below Utai in 2011 and playing BRET..they have every right to feel pi**ed off. They must be asking themselves a few questions…It seems Sheens has a belief that when the club recruits an old player to fill a void these players must have a stand up start ahead of guys who have proven themselves....Remember Jason Moodie's comeback?....what a flop, and last year we had Fitzy...who also flopped and took the position of an up and comer...Utai's role should be to play BRET and only get a run in the top grade if there are injuries...Brown, Daniella and Ratu are far better players than Utai yet they find themselves below him in the pecking order....go figure??...at the end of the day it wont matter if we keep winning...but I sure hope these gets get a look in some time down the track!...Yep Utai is one lucky Guy in my opinion!

Utai plays for wests now !?
I'm sure this hasn't been discussed in length in at least 4 other threads now….

You can never have enough [insert player's name] is rubbish and Sheens is an idiot to pick him threads…

I reserve judgement until after this game to get stuck into him. He was short of a run at the Roosters trial after not having played NRL football for two years.

Yes, Daniela, Latu and more so Brown are unlucky not to get a call up, but don't go all Fitzy on Utai until he has a complete barry and proves beyond all belief that he is not worthy of the spot.

Yep, I think this about sums it up. It's up to Utai to play out of his skin now and prove he's worth the spot.

I will repeat previous comment that I hope Utai shoves my words back down my throat but he imo has too many defensive flaws and problems with high ball to make it back in NRL

I've heard people say wait till he plays a game…..I've seen him play first grade for along time, and wane as the game changed, he got dropped from the bulldogs team, than their squad, then still not performing they moved positions to prevent him dealing with the high ball etc.... I've since watched him in NSW cup, without demanding selection, highlights normally I concede.

Blokes dont improve dramatically at 29, by training less outside an NRL program.

We've all seen enough on him to make a judgement.

I said earlier, altho I dont know him,However I have crossed paths with him (before, during and after his prime), and he seems like a terrific guy, and would love to see him do really well for the tigers sake and his own as well, all that said , I like many others a baffled at the decision

I would have rather seen no less than 5 players selected, apart from the obvious brown and daniella, if Beau is the long term plan, would have been perfect to give a youngster a crack, either Ratu or Finau, or fractionally out of position a Mullane or Meeny.....

anyhow, i have complained enough about this, and really do hope Utai does well

We don't know how hard he trained off the field, nor do we know the game plan from Super Coach. It could be that just he deserves the spot more than Brown or Daniella. Let's wait till after the first game.

I disagree i think that Mitch Brown is extremely unlucky he was as safe as a bank during the final series and played particularly well against the dragons i thought. I believe that the bulldogs will pepper utai with the high ball because that's his weakness.

its a very surprising selection imo …. the dogs know every weakness he has ,,,,and they will be aiming them straight at him ....brown had a great finish to last season and i thought he would be a walk up starter .. daniella was just average and to say he was outstanding is a huge over statement ....

Give this guy a chance, I think you'll find he'll do a much better job then Beau Ryan and Mitch Brown. Maybe he doesn't deserve it but I do think he'll make the most of it.

I'm sure Mitch Brown and Geoff Daniella have both been spoken to by Sheens and Folkes and know the reasoning behind Matt Utai's selection (the reasoning that we will never know), and are probably ok with it. I personally think Daniella is rated more as a centre, and Brown as a fullback. Wait till origin when Lawrence is selected, and wait till Mckinnon does his hammy again, and we will probably see them both back in the side.

I did say in a previous thread that Brown is probably annoyed, however in hindsight I retract that statement.

yeh brown stands out for me too. he did everything right. i cant remember anything he did wrong.

get over the daniel fitzhenry stuff though guys its getting old and its not even funny.

Would be interesting to see how our attacking kicking game will work, especially the cross field kicks to the wing. One would think Utai's height issue would remove a possible avenue of attack to his wing?

i think they r going to try use him like they used tuaki. make metres, make more metres, and make even more metres.

i' would think that the attacking kicks are going to tuqiri's side of the field.
