Wests Tigers would like to extend their condolences to the family of Don Malone following his recent passing.

Don "Irish" Malone played the entirety of his first-grade career with the Western Suburbs Magpies, debuting on the wing in 1958 before shifting in to the halves.

Malone started on the wing for the Magpies in their 1959 Grand Final loss to St. George, and despite missing the 1961 Grand Final, also played in two more Grand Finals against the all-conquering Dragons in 1962 and 1963.

In total, Malone played 130 games for Western Suburbs — 68 of which were in first-grade — and helped the Magpies clinch the 1961 reserve grade competition.

Following his retirement from the game at the end of the 1965 season, Malone would remain connected with the Magpies, coaching third grade for three years where he would snare another Grand Final trophy.

The thoughts of all at Wests Tigers are with Don's family at this time.

@TheDaBoss Used to watch him playing at Pratten Park when I was a kid. Wests had a pretty fair backline in the early 60s with guys like Don Parish, Johnny Mowbray, Harry Wells, Gil MacDougall (mad dog's father), Peter Dimond, Rob McGuinness, Arthur Summons and Donnie Malone at halfback. Good player, sorry to hear of his passing.

Remember watching Don Malone - good player, sorry to hear he is no longer with us.

Condolences to his family and friends.

How would a backline like that measure up against to day so called super stars (playing under the 60s rules) Peter Diamond would kill em

@Elderslie_Tiger The key to your question is the rules you play under. In the 60s there was a three yard rule (10 metres today) and unlimited tackles (6 tackles today). The good sides of the 60s would murder today's teams under those rules but the reverse is also true. Today's teams would beat any team from the 60s playing today's rules. They used to say that St George would always kick off in the 60s if they won the toss. That allowed them to just pummel the other team with brutal tackles so that by the time they finally lost the ball which could be after 10 minutes of possession they were absolutely exhausted.

G'day @coivtny: I also went to Pratten Park for most of The Mighty Magpies home games.

What I remember most is the call "give it to Dimond" when we weren't going too well.
Also Jazzer Mowbray and the way he would run onto the field.

Looking back...what great days.

It's also great to hear stories from the Magpies side of the 'JV'. Should be more of it.

Have a great day coivtny :santa: :snowman: :tada:
