Vale Julian McMahon

Horrible news ... a shock.
As a few might know I had a horrible run with throat cancer.
This insidious disease can strike anyone, anywhere.
I'm 4 days into Dry July raising funds to do my bit to give back to the people who, basically, saved my life.
Tough when you're a big drinker ... but not as tough as cancer.
If you know anybody participating throw a few dollars in ... every little bit counts.
Loved Julian as the perfect Dr Doom. Vale.

Try wartime by comparison.

It only seems like so many because the news reports it so fast and wide.
Wartime there was a good reason for it, but we aren’t at war now There’s no reason now except for bad chemicals in our food and the shit they spray all over us from the sky.

Ah sorry but no. Some data from the Australian Government (Institute of Health):

This graph is a measure of the rate of premature deaths, taken as "potential years of life lost" for anyone dying younger than 75 years old. There's a peak with what I expect is WWI, actually not much change around WWII; very clearly bottoming out over time and as low as we've ever had on record.

This one is the rate of deaths 15-24 year olds: a slight uptick in 2019 but overall halved since 1999.

This one is the measure of potentially "avoidable deaths", meaning deaths that could potentially have been treated in the health care system. It is a measure of the success rate of the primary healthcare system, but regardless it shows a downward trend in preventable deaths, even just since 1997.

This is the 2023 deaths per age group. Unsurprisingly we observe a small but consistent increase in # deaths as age increases, with notable leaps after 55 years old. A rough increase of 50% on number of deaths in each age group after 55. Basically it's like this most years, but the clear message is - deaths still very much consolidated in the upper ages.
