I hate raising this in this context, but I was actually shocked. He only played 111 games and was sent off 17 times (1 in 7).

He was sent off many times for “repeated scrum infringements”.

Sometime in the early 1960s the referees decided to “clean up the scrums”, and started sending off hookers for repeated scrum infringements. They took a set against Kelly and sent him off many many times.

I remember him being interviewed about the “scum clean-up” and he said that he was sent off so many times that: “every time I heard the paper boy blow his whistle, I’d walk inside and have a shower”.

That was the reason he moved from hooker to prop – to avoid being sent off.

I think it was a tribute to his greatness (and probably the reason he was selected in the team of the century) that he was picked to play for Australia as the hooker, and when he moved to prop, he was selected in the Australian team as a prop.

Hooker was just as much a specialist position then as it is today and I can’t think of any other player to play in both positions for Australia.

Anyway, although he was sent off a number of times for belting blokes, I think most of his send -offs were for scrum infringements.

Good clarification thanks Fibro.

Im going to say something uncomfortable.

IVe always respected Ned, basically based on what people I know well who know him personally haev said about him as a man. IF these people love and respect him, Im sure he was a great man.

I never saw him play and have only ever heard the legendary stories of how "tough" and "uncompromising he was on the field. I grew up and played in the 80's and 90's and I know tough and Im not afraid or ashamed of the old toughness and violence, but in all the footage shown of Kelly's playing games, the highlights they keep showing of his "toughness" there was at least three complete "king hits". I was shocked because thats not toughness that just a thug.

I hate raising this in this context, but I was actually shocked. He only played 111 games and was sent off 17 times (1 in 7).

If you attended or viewed his funeral you would have realized he was alot more than a thug. Unbelievable.

Nah...I played in the 80's& 90's and I know league was a tough sport but there is a difference between the toughness of RL, particularly during those days, and a flat out king hit. Is Danny Williams "tough"?

Having said that I went looking for other footage of Kelly playing and in doing so found a longer version of the king hit (see video below). In all the highlights and celebration videos I saw of Kelly, they showed this footage from the 1:04 mark and THAT is a dog king hit, the equal of Danny Willams. But if you look more of the footage (from 0:44) it is clear WHY he did it and there is more honour there.

I reckon if you asked Noel Kelly's justification he would echo Chopper Read and say: "I never king-hit anybody that didn't deserve it".
