Vale Noel 'Ned' Kelly

Saw Ned play many times for the mighty Maggies at Pratten Park Ashfield and was lucky enough to be at the GF in 1963 **when atrocious refereeing cost Wests a win over a St George** side boasting Reg Gasnier, Johnny Raper, Changa Langlands, Sticks Provan and a host of other legendary Dragons. Arthur Summons, another Wests legend we lost recently, was the Maggies captain that day. A truly great hooker (from a time when hookers actually competed for the ball) and a legend in every sense of the word. Vale Ned!

Hmmm seems like nothing’s changed in over 50 years!!

Another true legend of the game gone, wish they still made players with that kind of love for the game and their club. RIP

Darcy Lawlor bet on St George. Jack Gibson arrived game day stating that he knew the SP that took the bet. Wests were never going to win that game.

Sadly true! Arthur Summons claimed til the day he died that Wests had been robbed blind-and they were!

Foxsports league legends had a great interview with noel Kelly- perhaps it will be replayed in the near future. He talks about how referees allowed a get square during a game- similar to Robbie farahs get square against that north Queensland bloke a few years back.
I saw a game at pratten park where billy Rayner was laid out after a scrum and was prone on the ground-
obviously billy had upset ned earlier.great stuff!

I was part of a group at the Lidcombe Catholic Club shortly after Ned was sent off in the first minutes of a test match where he recounted the incident. He said he saw the Aust.5/8 on the ground with his eyes spinning around like that poker machine with the NZ front rower standing over him. He said he couldn't help himself and left the field with the NZ front rower prone on the ground. This was typical of him. Most of his misdemeanours were retaliation.
Another funny incident was when on a kangaroo tour of France the French Ref was prewarned and determined to send Ned off but mistook Ian Walsh for Ned saying in broken English "Kelly off".
Despite all this he was a true gentleman off the field.
Thanks for the memories Ned .RIP.

One example of bum refereeing in this game. Peter Dimond clearly grounded the ball after an Arthur Summons kick through and Referee Darcy Lawler, yards (pre metric) behind the play and no way able to see the touchdown clearly, ruled he'd bounced the ball. There was 12 inches of thick mud all over the SCG. Nobody could have bounced anything in that slush!

Yes, that interview was great. His biography is a good read as well.
A wild man on the field but always seemed like such a gentleman off it. The world sadly is losing touch with blokes like him.
He'd be dealing out a few left hooks in Heaven. Rest In Peace Ned, the once-great game of rugby league was built around men like you.

Yes that book " Hard Man : A Life in Football " is a great read. Almost impossible to get a copy these days but worth getting if you see it. Here is a nice tribute from Roy Masters.

Beautiful service today. I’m very thankful it was streamed live on YouTube. Lots of players including Kelly’s Kids attended. I’m pretty sure I saw Justin Pascoe there as well.

A very strong representation from WT and Magpies. Mike Bailey, Pascoe and Mick Liubinskas all there.

Im going to say something uncomfortable.

IVe always respected Ned, basically based on what people I know well who know him personally haev said about him as a man. IF these people love and respect him, Im sure he was a great man.

I never saw him play and have only ever heard the legendary stories of how "tough" and "uncompromising he was on the field. I grew up and played in the 80's and 90's and I know tough and Im not afraid or ashamed of the old toughness and violence, but in all the footage shown of Kelly's playing games, the highlights they keep showing of his "toughness" there was at least three complete "king hits". I was shocked because thats not toughness that just a thug.

I hate raising this in this context, but I was actually shocked. He only played 111 games and was sent off 17 times (1 in 7).
