The wests team of the early 1960's was one of the best teams in the world at the time. It was just their bad luck they ran into probably the greatest teams of all time…....4 times over the space of 11 years including three in succession.

The grand final of 61 was the start of a rivalry that culminated in the 63 grand final moment between summons and provan. Probably typical that western suburbs greatest contribution to the spirit of the game came after a close loss, but what I am saying is that the result is not what we are remembering, but the essence of what we all love about rugby league as symbolised by proven and summons. The same applies to the 89 grand final. We don't remember the game because balmain won or because it was Canberra's first title, we remember it because it is known as the greatest grand final.

Gary many people have questioned the refereeing in those Grand Finals Even Bill Harrigan speaks about it in his autobiography . We will of course never know the truth but you would not publish it if there wasn't something to it for legal reasons

Not much you can do but wait for moments like 2005 to get your revenge.

We still owe manly for 78.

I understand the significance of the iconic Summons/Provan image and the early 60s rivalry between Wests and St George– but hello! Wests LOST three grand finals in a row to St George in the early 60s. I am not inclined to celebrate three losses in a row.

Wests beat Souths in the 1952 grand final -- that's something to celebrate.

Why don't we make the Wests Tigers v Souths game THE heritage game for us each year and alternate the heritage strips each year between Wests and the Tigers?

hahaha but the real reason you want wt v souths as the heritage game every year is because souths was balmain's biggest rival.

We never used to celebrate anything as a comp on a whole.
Now we have dedicated heritage rounds.
And win or lose….theres only one 50th anniversary of the 61 decider.

Ink: I agree, but I am referring to future seasons.
Alien: Yes, but the WT v Souths game is commemorated as Balmain v Souths, when it should alternate annually with Wests v Souths.

what about the rival round or whatever its called. who would we play against that round?

Wests v Manly is an obvious rivalry from the late 70's. It was remembered by WT in 2009 at a game at the sfs.. It may sound radical but do you think WT could pull off a heritage match at lidcombe oval?? i know the corporate facilities are lacking but its just as suburban as leichhardt.. Thoughts?? Just a one off event not an annual event.. Perhaps a trial?

i like the idea of having a trial there against manly

but depends on the surface…

rival round Souths and Manly. dt I can understand where your nostalgia, I've have been to Lidcombe many times in the past, my thought, I'd prefer to go to Campbelltown have been spoiled by modern facilities.

Maybe a trial game if that.
Long odds though the right people just need to **wan**t to do it, its not like playing on the moon

Not a big fan of rivalry rounds Aren't all teams our rivals . The club keeps talking about going forward and being about the Wests Tigers but they want to have rivalry round with our foes from the past . If we have rivalry round it should be either the Cowboys or the Storm due to out turbulent pasts . Not our pasts as Balmain or Wests .Our past as the Wests Tigers is the future :sign:

Interesting point about moving forward Happy however your comment brought to mind my experience at Canberra stadium during the semi last year. All the bloke in front of me could go on about was how canberra was going to repeat the result of the '89 grand final. The heritage issue is spread amongst supporters from other clubs as well.

That Bloke was wrong…..

Agreed conno. We have 200 plus years of combined history.. Embrace the present and future and the history. WT has 11 years of history but that doesnt mean we have less history then the storm
