I really appreciate the way some of the (presumably) guys on this board comment on tactics in the game, as good as the pro commentators in many cases. And of course some of those previous champion players now paid commentators are very good at their job. Just when I hear a female commentator I wonder who wrote the script for her? Why aren't I hearing it out of Gould's or Sterlo's mouth? Do they really know what they are talking about?

And why do I appreciate good commentary because I was only taught how to play by Catholic nuns and know little of tactics.

That Sampson may be more knowledgeable than many fans but one can't compare that with the professional footie players with good footie brains, like my ex-first grade mate down the club. I imagine how Slater reads the game he would leave those lasses for dead for understanding the game. (and don't call them lasses)

It is our politically correct world these days that dictate that women must be seen to have an equal input into male dominated sports, and vice-versa when you hear men commentating the netball.
The reason most ex-NRL players aren't called upon to commentate is because despite having awesome knowledge of the game itself they cannot express themselves intelligently to save their lives : big Gordie being the most effective example, he is like water-torture.

You have to watch those Catholic Nuns as footy coaches, they would be masters at the ancient art of squirrel gripping for sure.

Refreshing to see a person like Sampson get a major role in presenting channel nines NRL coverage, she is not a failed weather girl or a tall leggy blond who reads from a auto script, she actually is a professional presenter. Never thought I would see the day when channel nine actually used a women with ability in front of a women who looks like a Barbie doll

Sounds good to have a professional presenter - but what about the chronically injured footie players whom can no longer ply their trade etc.?? I know the Clubs try to do the right thing by them but these guys are suffering and often can not perform other jobs. e.g, maybe Billy Slater now. And when they are out of playing footie can actually get to like them and appreciate their knowledge.

It is like in road construction the older worn guys would do traffic warden jobs and stay actively employed, now those machines do it or young bods and those old guys become useless.

I suspect having Yvonne presenting has less to do with political correctness, and more to do with higher ratings by encouraging women to watch. I don't think she or Molan are particularly insightful, but not every viewer has been playing and watching all their life. You have to cater to novices/casual viewers also.

I'd take Sampson over Shirvo any day.

Yeah but you can't have a bloke gifted a role into commentary etc who has all the knowledge in the world but unfortunately would be that boring getting his knowledge across that people would be turning the telly off in droves(or at least the sound). Listening to Billy Slater's nasally whine for more than 5 mins would have some reaching for the cyanide. Great player yes, as a commentator no thanks. Special comments only perhaps- couldn't be any worse than Joey.

Absolutely right. Of course having more women in presenting roles is great for enticing women to have an interest in our sport and that is great, all for adding to the diversity.
But in saying that, if the NRL want to gravitate more children into our sport are Hi-5 or the Wiggles gonna get a pre-match segment on the coverage?
Yvonne is definitely a huge step up from Shirvo, god knows how that puppet weasled his way into a cushy primo gig like he's got.

May I suggest that to further entice a diverse audience that we have woman commentators in niqab - go the full hog - with English subtitles of course

Sampson job is not to give expert commentary, so she doesn't need to have played the game or even have a great knowledge of the game. Her role is basically to interview and anchor the show and you would probably find that she has been told what questions to ask.

And that is exactly that gives me the poops - it is contrived and we have to pretend we are listening to and respecting someone informative. Give me any player except that Qlder with the frog stuck in this throat.

And you don't think Braith is contrived? He is more wooden than a pirate's leg.

Of course it is contrived, they work to a format and each commentator plays a part in the format. Okay Sampson is been used to give some gender balance and attract more viewers, but as I said before at least they have not gone for a barbie doll type person to play this role

I don't think Yvonne has the questions written out for her - I am of the opinion it is all her own work.

As for Billy Slater - give it a rest - if he could credibley do Yvonne's job you'd give 5 cents to the hospital.

teach Serena Williams the game and let her play a bit and then I would be right behind a female announcer - with the husky voice is perfect.http://bossip.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/serena-2.jpg

Can't believe how hard Molan is failing.
No love for the lizard lady.

Iam with you, she is probably a really nice person, but as a sports anchor person, just doesn't cut the mustard. Might do okay as a weather girl but nine needs to get her out of where she is now

That is what I have been getting at. You have to respect the person as a sports person in the first place, no matter what gender they are.
And 100 times better if is in the relevant game.
