Tigers emerge as favourites for Dallin Watene-Zelezniak's signature

It has come down to a three-horse race for outgoing Panthers flyer Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, but desperation may just put the Tigers in the box seat.

The Kiwi captain - who has fielded offers from the Tigers, Cowboys and Eels - has been granted permission from Penrith to talk to rival clubs after he was dropped to reserve grade last week.

Parramatta reportedly had their nose in front, the first club to get a deal on the table, however The Australian's Brent Read says the Tigers are working out ways to fit him in their salary cap.

The Cowboys have lost interest, turning their attention to Storm youngster Scott Drinkwater with plans for Valentine Holmes in the future.

''There are three clubs that have been linked with him predominantly - North Queensland, Parramatta and the Wests Tigers,'' Read told Sporting News.

''My gut feel is the Cowboys have gone in another direction. They've got an interest in Scott Drinkwater, the young Melbourne fullback.

''He's a much cheaper option than Dallin and they want to keep some money for Val Holmes if things don't work out. I get the feeling they will go down the Drinkwater path.

''That leaves the Tigers and Parramatta. My gut feel is the Tigers are the more desperate to land him, the interesting thing is how they are going to make that happen.''

As it stands, the cash-strapped Tigers will need to offload a player to make room for what will likely be a lucrative offer, with Penrith to pay for part of his salary.

Prop Russell Packer has been tossed up, however Read said it was unlikely a club would show interest given his recent form.

''Russell Packer's name has been bandied about. I don't think that will happen. He's got a few years left on a pretty lucrative deal and I can't see anyone picking the tab up on that the way Russell is going playing reserve grade,'' he said.

''They don't have the space at the moment but Michael Maguire is a pretty clever guy and he's had a pretty good relationship with Dallin over the years, obviously he made him New Zealand captain.

''Their issue is finding a player they can move to make it happen. As long as they can find a market for that, I think they will be the club that will land Dallin.''

The 3 main players to offload would be Rochow, Taylor and Packer.
All 3 would be ideal for Super League as I cannot see any NRL taking them onboard apart from Dragons taking Packer back due to the injury of Graham.
DWZ would be a fantastic pickup and then next year we can focus on getting decent props who can take us forward.

How funny is that article. Brent Read pushing his "gut feel" as facts and news. I think he would be a good addition to our swap and it would be a good fit for both parties but I don't think it is a lock.

I thought I heard in the panthers game tonight that Tim Grant has done a Pec ? If true this would help with a Packer swap if it is actually on the cards

If what I've heard is correct the only reason Packer will go to Penrith is to punch Iv in the head repeatedly

They need a hooker desperately ......

Packer is on more than ET. Penrith are in cap troubles and might want to cheaper players.
Personally I would prefer to offload Packer but it may not work out that way

Does anyone else get the feeling we are getting used as a bargaining chip to help move him to Eels ? Just doesn't feel right for some reason. Penrith need to shed money and why would they take a player off us on good money and not use one of there juniors.

Win-win really. It's more money Parra are spending that they can't use on another opportunity.

Getting a player from us saves then having to compete for a player next year. One of the hopes we have is DWZ being close to Madge.

@swag_tiger Yeah i'm struggling to see why Parra would be more attractive than us to him? I don't think they're in significantly better shape than us cap wise so they probably can't offer a material amount more. There also seems to be a good relationship between him and Madge.

Souths, Roosters, Storm, Broncs etc are more desirable than we are. But I don't think Parra are. If I were DWZ i'd be choosing us over them.

Hopefully Marsters is talking to him as well.

@swag_tiger

Im struggling to think of a reason to pay this guy anything near some of the dollars being posted here.

He aint no Ponga, in terms of critical recruit.

Im happy to pass and not pay overs.

@Spartan117 don't mind him but not for $700-800k being posted. Hope he can walk on water for that much coin.

Completely agree that is not the sort of money you pay a winger who thinks he is a fullback

I think Madge is smart enough to not sign DWZ for that much.

Coaches can hate that players don't tow the line

Look who desperate Seibold was to get rid of Roberts

I just don't see an upside from getting rid of any player mentioned to bring in DWZ

Possibly Nofoaluma , Rochow or Garner ( but Nofo played well v souths based on that form I say no to that deal )

Taylor and Packer are great experienced back ups to have along with Rowdy or who ever he replaces in our top 17

Again I'd be very interested in what any medicals turned up .....

Garner is a keeper.
