When you have 2 Qld sides having a replay lacks common sense
The only winners would be the NRL and the airlines (again )
20 minutes of extra time is a far better idea
This seems to be to be the obvious way to do it.
Teams would not go for the 1 point so quickly, and mistakes would not necessarily be match-ending. Both teams would get a proper chance with the ball, and fatigue would make it very compelling to watch.
Perhaps for regular-season draws you could play out 10 mins extra time and not have a golden point. 20 mins might be too much for those games where a draw would ultimately be ok.
I for one think it's time to change up the points and match-end rules for the whole season.
Extra time losses should be worth a point, as should bigger wins and narrow losses. Every result should count.
For example, if wins are 2 points, > 24 point win worth an extra point. <= 6 point loss should be worth 1 point to the loser. Games that end in draws at 80 mins should award both teams 1 point, with the extra-time winner taking another 1.
Some commentators say that if you can kick a FG to win at 79 mins, you should be able to do it in GP. Though I don't agree, because the GP clock stops and the regular clock does not, in a revised points system a win "at the death" generally yields 2-1 points, whether it's 79th minute or 89th.
