Wayne Pearce: My Rugby League Story

ARL Commissioner Wayne Pearce's journey to success began with Balmain police boys when a family tragedy showed him Rugby League was more than a game.
Truly inspiring

My dad's favourite player. He is an absolute gentleman and yet tough as teak as a player.

Not sure how his son ended up being such a knob, he had a great role model in Junior.

Yep, don’t get Mitch’s issue. It’s almost as though Junior was on such a pedestal that he came to the conclusion he could never match him so he went the other way...🤷‍♂️

Great player, champion bloke, crap coach

My claim to fame was I was actually coached by Wayne a few times when he use to come down and see us young Leichhardt Juniors players

That was when he first started playing 1st grade
I met him again in Cairns about 10 years ago now
He was doing some kind of motivational talk to the staff at ANZ bank
I just happened to be in the Casino Bar when we caught each other's eyes
He said something to me from about 10 meters away and I actually turned around to see who he was talking to
It was me
It was love at 1st sight
I went over and had a long chat with him
He was very down to earth
Spoke about Mitchell before he made origin
When he was good
Wayne played it down and was very modest in the way he spoke about Mitchell
I guess he knows 1st hand at the pressure of the game
One of the real gentlemen of our sport

Two blokes that didn't play for my club but I needed to see their last home games in person was his and Kenny's. True legend.

I was at Junior's... not Kenny's though!

Kenny was always one of my favourite players who never played for us (tigers) even though he almost always destroyed us on the field. He Sludge Rogers and Slippery Morris always seemed to be able to turn a game in their favour.
In many ways football was far more skilful than it is today even with much of the thuggish element removed in modern rugby league

The best defensive player i have seen. Many top line forwards went very quiet after a Pearce tackle. Players have told me he was a very funny guy when on Kangaroo tours, and i doubt you would talk to any player that did not respect him.

Always was and always will be a "Big Hitter"

It may have been in the book about Pearce but he wrote that Bing Pringle said to him if you're going to make a try saving covering tackle down the touchline make it on the western side of LO. Pearce thought it was due to the slope of the ground. Pringle said no it is because most spectators sit that side and if you make a great tackle you want to receive the most applause.

Along with David Brooks and Bruce Maguire, it was an awesome pack.

I played my junior footy with Junior until u23’s. He was miles ahead of the pack as far as commitment and conditioning went. I was faster than him and I fancy a bit more skilful...counted for nothing when the tough got going..
