We Need To Understand The Quality Of Our Side

We are not going to attract players the calibre of Mitchell, Taumalolo etc.

And this is the problem. We can't attract quality players.

@hybrid_tiger ...it’s catch 22..we need to be successful in order to be a attractive destination for players and we need to attract players to be successful.

We need to be a hell of a lot smarter with our recruitment, we need players on the way up the hill and not three quarters down the other side

OP is right. We probably have the worst roster in the competition (Bulldogs and us can battle....but seriously, what is better about our roster?).

We need to clean out what we can. Yes we did a clean out (a huge one) two years ago but Cleary absolutely bombed the rebuild. He had a whole salary cap to play with it and came up with absolute donuts.

We need 2-3 outside backs (any position) and then need to fill the rest with stop gap players (our whole backline is stop-gap at the moment). We need to except Brooks/Reynolds are our halves, and then sign 3 impact forwards. We also need to sign a heap of good potential reserve grade players to bring across, because at the moment we are screaming out for someone in reserve grade to show us they are up to 1st grade and noone is doing it.

We should scout all clubs playing reserve grade...offer the fastest and tallest backs a guaranteed NRL contract to come and play for the WT...the do the same with forwards, the strongest, fastest, rambling front rowers and back rowers to join our club...

Agree with most of what has been said. We need to look at youth not veterans from now on and try and sign another 6 or 7 Matterson type upcoming players in positions we need the most.

Hooker - need
Prop to partner Twal - need
5/8 - need
Centre to partner Marsters
2 x Wingers with speed and height
Fullback

I have faith in Madge but the Tigers need some youth and speed like Cronulla have,

We are inconsistent but we will be in and around 8th place at seasons end hopefully. If we can't beat a Panthers side missing Maloney, Kikau, Whare, Yeo and god knows who else next week, its white flag time.

As far as team quality goes, we aren't going to attract the top end. We rely on up and comers who might not get their chance in a quality side - like Matterson for example. My concern is I think we need to let a few go such as Packer, Matulino, Reynolds (and dare I say Mbye) who chew up a fair bit of cap but unfortunately are on long term deals.

Thanks Ivan!!!

Serious question here, if we can prove Ivan had one foot out the door and was planning on going to Penrith whilst still providing input on whether Wests Tigers should sign or retain players, can we sue him for sabotaging us and not doing his job without conflicting interests.

If Gould is being pressured out of Penrith, we might find him a useful ally against Cleary.

Maybe I've been watching too many movies...

lol doubt it..but I like it...

My understanding is when this started to blow up Kelly Egan and Dave Warwick took control of recruitment and retention decisions solely...remembering they were always in the process anyway and major decisions/signings need to have board approval..

Anyway sick of the excuses ...oh our rosters crap ...not the coaches team...always next year...blah blah blaaaaaah

Winning starts Manday..

@Honkylips Understood Honky, but fans have lost patience, the one year a clean break with a salary cap we get bent over by a coach who had designs on being elsewhere.

Seven years without finals. Last finals appearance as per below:

2018 - Easts, Brisbane, Melbourne, Souths, Cronulla, Penrith, Dragons, Warriors
2017 - Parra, Cowboys, Manly
2016 - Titans, Bulldogs, Canberra
2013 - Newcastle
2011 - Wests

Everyone sans us and Newcastle fans have had something to be excited about in September in the last three seasons. In that time we have had five coaches as well.

Maybe Maguire might be able to move some players on and get some talent over, but something has to give soon, despite the front office turning things around the primary concern is to be successful on the field.

A lot of us have lost patience and demand results, #nextyear cannot be tolerated anymore.

@Cultured_Bogan

x2
agree 100% with this, this year is do or die for us imo.......

also i love ur haiku, its perfect :+1:

One thing that is notable in comparison to other sides, is the size and speed of other Team's outside backs, especially compared to our current wingers, trying hard isn't enough these days, all round quality counts. I don't know how long Madge is going to persist with Jenning's in the centres ? he has not offered much. It's time to bring in new blood, similar to what Cronulla is successfully doing. I really liked what Liddle offered when he came on, Robbie has been consistent, but it's time to give the future a go. Please Tigers lock up Mikaele and Twal before they are poached, there off contract.

@Blocker1963 One line in your post “Give the future a go !”... well unfortunately that will never happen at this club at any level ,our club still lives in the yesterday and always will , watching Cronulla and there explosive youth on display and look at our roster you realise how far behind our club actually is .
Liddle needs to be selected it is time to see if the kid has the stuff moving forward but then again?

We need to understand that if we just keep doing the same thing with the same players we will get the same result.

Its time for changes, who cares if we make changes and miss the 8, its better than just going through the motions and missing the 8.

@Snake by all means give him a go, we obviously need to look at life after Farah, but if he breaks again?

Thinking about it it might be the time to do it, because if he does break down again, then it's time to think about aggressively chasing another quality hooker.

Liddle made a massive difference when he came on. Our attack suddenly clicked and we made several breaks and half breaks which he set up. His delivery was good, defence was fine. He needs to play more and more each week and we'll then see if we need to sign a starting hooker or a backup one.

We all need to keep our heads and understand that we are not a top 8 side and if we fall in then great. Our side is an average side across the park. The scoreline against Easts last night shouldn't surprise anyone. They are the most well balanced side since the Melbourne & QLD sides of a couple of years ago. I hate Easts as much as the next person but unless ravaged by injury I cannot see anyone stopping them from making it back to back premiers.

Back to us, We have a chance next week against Penrith as they have been hammered by injuries. Lucky for us.

Surely there isnt anyone here that thinks we are a top 8 side?? I predicted 10th at the start of the year and Im sticking to it. I created a post a couple of weeks ago under Shane2801. It was about the skill level and concern I have for our club regarding the future. We need to draw quality players and it worries me if we cannot. We have no junior players pressing for the top grade which is scary. Maybe we have to instill a bit of intimidation? Run the gauntlet with sin binning, become grubby? I don't know.

Hopefully Madge has something up his sleeve for next year or Im afraid it will be more of the same.

I totally agree:white_frowning_face:
