We shouldnt be to critical....just yet...

@willow

Live in the past? like past 6 months? Coach ran out, Pascoe's woes, players punching on with cabbies I've missed some for sure.
All in all pretty tame by NRL standards but the difference is the on field has been identical to almost every other year. Coaches / players / CEO/ home grounds/ Chairperson/ sponsors all change. The only thing that shows no change is the Juro curve. its clockwork decline as per usual.

Purely out of curiosity, whats the upside to our on field future?

We have a number of players off contract this season and will be active in the player market.

@willow Yes, I reckon you're right. The turnover of players this year will be instructive. Safe to say Maguire will also add a couple of players tapped on the shoulder, not just those whose contracts have expired. I would expect any he wants to re-sign will be announced soon enough.

The NRL fine / penalty has taken a chunk out of our available funds for next year but we should be able to make a few astute buys and hopefully atleast one known player.

I certainly hope we have feelers out to the ESL and the Pacific Islands for smart. tough or big players to take a chance on. Mind you we do seem to be late into the fray for those markets.

@2005magic

The pacific islands & Fiji are almost endless with raw footy talent - we need astute trusted scouts to bring the best “unknowns” on board.

This giving a coach 3 years thing is just another steaming pile of mediocrity.

This is Michael Maguire, a premiership winning coach and one of the best in the business. You give muppets like Jason Taylor 3 years not proven professionals.

Yes it will take time to build his desired roster but he doesnt need time to prove himself.

It will take him a little time to work out the issues with our culture. This is where we are now, he is sticking with the team and trying to understand why they are not performing. Why they choke when they do. Why they go missing when we needed them etc.

It will also take him a little time and identify the regular first grader players who just cant get it done. Some heads will roll. New heads will then be brought in.

All in all by this time next season he will have close to the team he wants and he will have ownership of it from there on in.

Yeah agree, look at what Hasler (a Premiership winning coach) has done already with Manly - touted as bottom 4 at the start of the season, no Turbo, no DCE, no worries.

I have to say I've been underwhelmed by Egan and co with their recruitment to date. I hope we are looking to replace them too if they don't get anywhere this recruiting round for next year.

Exactly.

A coach can get instant traction. Hasler had the advantage of knowing the club and its culture. Maguire is still figuring it out but will get there very soon i imagine.
