all the improvement means nothing unless we make the finals, where was this initiative 2 years ago?, where was it in the pre season? If we dont make the finals it doesnt mean squat as we have finished 9-11 the last 3 years and is most likely where we will finish this year if we dont make it,

im not going to give the coach credit for getting the team defending well, thats his fricking job, its not like hes a rookie, 25 year and hes the aussie coach, this is something that should of been happening years ago not just in a 5 week spurt

Have you enjoyed the last month? I have. If that enjoyment doesn't go all the way through September, I will still have enjoyed the last month. Take from the season what you can. Otherwise you will go mad…

i look at it more like have you enjoyed the last 3 and a half years? pffff, weve had a good month so what, like i said it doesnt mean anything if we dont make the finals, and it sure as hell doesnt make up for the last 3 years

Get over the last 3 years mate. The boys are going well NOW. Forget the past and enjoy the present.

Well said gallagher, the Manly fan boss has been recieving lots of mssgs on the whiteboards in the toolroom and mealroom at work

Enjoy the now and be positive we'll make the semis…there'll be plenty of time to grumble over summer if we dont

I think it is much about natural player growth and timing as it is about structure.

Lawrence was a terrible defender at centre when he came into grade in that position. He did not know how to read the line as well as he could and his body positioning in tackles was poor to say the least. He has grown as a player and has mentally matured as well.

I think the right side has tightened up with the inclusion of Ayshford as he defends in the half slot on the right of the ruck. He does not have the flaw that Morris sometimes had in defense of rushing infield to cut off plays one out from the ruck thus leaving his centre and therefor Ryan as well completely posted on a number of occasions.

The inclusion of Galea and the growth of Payne into the lock role have also been features. Galea is not an impact player. He is the guy who will break his body to do his job in whatever capacity you ask him to. Heighno has the natural build and attitude of an impact player. Not having him there conserving himself to be an 80 minute player has helped as well.

Benji has improved as a defender as well. Every week his confidence is growing which in turn means he doesn't feel the need to overplay his hand in attack to make up for his defensive shortcomings.

Yes the structure has improved as well but I out it down more as a wrap for player development and correct positioning than overall tactics and structure

Well said. All the players you've mentioned have improved on their short comings and are able to execute their role in the team 90% of the time rather than 40 or 50% of the time.

Sheens has spoken about getting their individual game right and the rest will follow and I think that's true. Each player has been given a job and has had to concentrate on getting that job done for the team.

A little worried that we didn't close out the game against Manly and kick on. Defense looked flimsy in the last 20 mins, but in saying that, we had terrific desperation and scramble defense when it mattered.

and if we dont make the finals i dont wanna see posts from you and ink being negative, afterall weve had a good 4 weeks, and still sit outside the 8, all hail sheens and his masterey

3/4's of our probs would have been solved by moving moltzen to 7, benji to 6 and morris well away from the halves combo.
morris is a great defender, but time and time again he killed our attack and was so frustrating to watch.

it didn't take this long for sheens to realize what morris was capable of,or should i say not capable of.
sheens knew the first year and last year he was already talking of a possible benji/lawrence combo.
\
\
it has taken this long to develop a half.
while i wanted a gallant 1 and moltzen 7 at the start of the year i can understand why sheens opted to go the way he did.
i remember a tigers article at the start of the year about moltzen and his attitude towards the game, and not taking it as seriously as the coaching staff wanted.
to his credit he worked hard and has now proven that he is a first grader in work ethic and performance.
he proved he was worth the responsibility in the halves.

should sheens have played him at half earlier, yes, but we also have to take into account the elbow injury tim had during the first half of the year.probably still has issues with it.
would it have been wise to have gallant in the team at the back and also having moltzen in the front line becoming a target for the opposition attack.
isn't that worth consideration?

as for our defense i have to give a big wrap to gibbs.
with galloway missing during our tough stretch giibs stepped up and his line speed in defense is by far the best in the club.
that was leadership on the field that everyone is now starting to follow.

the ship is now on the right track again, but a loss in the next 2 weeks will see everything they have done the last month count for zero.
the next 2 weeks are going to have me worried because history has made me come to expect them to lose one of those games.

what has been proven is that sheens never lost his players as alot suggested .
you don't see this kind of work in defense by a team that no longer believes in their coach.

I am a Sheens supporter, its very refreshing to see some posative remarks going his way for once. Ive butted heads a few times on the old forum about our coaching staff. Sheens brings a lot more than just a few wins at the end of the season to the club. He brings structure a policey of fostering local talent ( evident throughout his career) Devising drills that prepare his players for some of the most exciting play possible ect ect . IMO we need to support him, them, a bit more through thick and thin.

Question for you - how many of the experts were tipping us to be in the top 8 at the start of the year? How many were tipping us to get the wooden spoon. Even if we come 9th or 10th, we have performed better than most expected at the start of the year.

thats where we have finished the last 3 years, we may aswell have come last, there is no pride in finishing 9th or 10th, sheens doesnt deserve any praise unless we make the finals and neither do the players

We win about 40-50% of our games every year. We are not embarrassed week after week. Ever year there have been a few teams worse than us. Things could be an awful lot worse!

I'd love us to have played finals football over the last few years and have been disappointed at the end of each season we have missed out, but I have still enjoyed each season.

This is the sort of attitude at our club that limits us from playing at our potential.

Have a look at the Knights….they have performed much better then people expected....is it too much to ask the same from our club after a very lean 3 years?

The so called Great Phil Gould had us 14th in the telecrap at the start of the season

Let me just say - I am a supporter. I am not the club or the players or the management. I hope they always strive for everything they can get. I am sitting on the sideline always hoping they win, but what I hope and think doesn't change anything.

….After the first half dozen games off the season concededing a gazillion points a game...Supercoach Sheens was looking like a goose especially considering it was He himself who took on more responsibility in putting the defensive structure in place....

Now coming to the back end .....Defence is winning us games...don't know what the ave. is but it would be pretty impressive over the last 2 months or so

The style has changed much more up and in and speed of line and gaol-line defence has been outstanding in recent weeks...fantatic speed of the line and tackling in numbers rapping up the ball working hard for each other and making great reads more often than not ,,,the downside it takes it's toll.....65 mins we were brilliant against Manly it chews a lot of petrol...but they still dug deep and hung on

Anyone catch NRL tactics last night....nice little analyses of goal line D highlighting Lawrence....?

Intersted to hear your guys thoughts on the defence....Is it Finals Football quality....?

Geo, you'd probably remember that ive believed defence has been our biggest problem, and when Sheens said he's doing the defence this year, i went and backed us for the top 6 straight away. Ive felt that its improved all year, and now with some decent team selections, we have a competitive side which reflects us finally having a decent for and against as opposed to other years. Ive been dirty on Sheens, but even if we dont make the finals, at least we know we've improved and can take more positves into 2010 than any other year.

And how good is our left side defence, Tuiaki, Lawrence, Ellis and Marshall have been shutting everything down.

And when it comes to attack, we have it coming together nicely. Marshall hitting Ellis and Lawrence on the left with Moltzen hitting Galea and Ayshford on the right. If Heighno can find his best at lock and bring back the footwork we know he has, then it looks pretty good.

Yeah credit were credits due.Our defence has been premiership winning stuff. The eagles won the comp leaking in 14 points on average,i think we are only a little over that at 15.8 on average. The way we are scrambling is like 05
I rekon its due because we have finally found the right combo's & the use of the bench has been spot on
Special mention to Galea who's tackling technique is brilliant.Every young kid should take note its text book stuff.

But if i can be critical, our D in the middle of the field still needs adressing in a big way.The opposition still seem to get out of there half quite easily & break the line often.Against parra, dogs & the titans it could hurt us as they have excellent suport players
But over all keep it up TIGERS lets put the chooks to the sword!!!!

Mate….I'll spell it out slowly so you can follow.

We are winning - Im positive.

If we miss the eight - thats negative and I'll be disappointed......its why marriage and kebabs are very similar, they all start terrificly, and end up a mess.
