Wests Tigers 2016...The winning formula..

It doesn't work like that. All that matters is scoring more than the opposition in each game because then you win games. Don't kid yourself that the stats show JT was the best first year coach we've had. He has been the worse.

I don't like the spin. We had a really bad year last year and came 2nd last on points differential. Then we had the Farah debacle. I'm hopeful that JT learned from that experience and we don't have another dud year. If we do I hope we sack the guy. If we have a good year I'd be happy with resigning him.

The team's points differential last year was better than 5 other teams, not great but still a substantial improvement on the previous 2 seasons. And if it improves again this year then we'll be heading in the right direction, if it doesn't then maybe changes need to made. Let's see how things go.

I just want to be clear on this because logically what you and others are stating makes no sense. If we improved last year why were we basically dead last ?

Its pretty simple in that we have to consistently score more points than we let in against each team we play. Its no good scoring 40 but losing because the opposition scored 42 or defending supposedly well and the opposition scoring 10 when we score 8.

I think JT learned this lesson last year and changed his approach. You need to be scoring points. You need to defend well. Then hopefully you will win games consistently.

A great kicking game is another way do dominate possession, but very seldom do you see a effective kick at the end of a set when a team is being dominated in defence. No one will argue that you can win games without still having the ability to attack, but the point we have been trying to make is it all starts with big defence and plenty of it

Defence always wins games.

We have not had a decent kicking game since Scott Prince was with us.

Hopefully Brooks can improve this aspect of his game. We need repeat sets.

We copped some floggings in our losses in '14
We narrowed it a lot more last year and while we lost 2 more games overall than 14, the gap and the manner of losses was closer
Its a work in progress but you continue on with your self internal examination

I looked up the stats for each coach in their first year with the club and Jason Taylor actually came out best. In his first year his team scored on average per game just a little over 20 points which is slightly higher than the other 4 coaches. His team also conceded an average per game less than the other 4, just a little over 23 pts per game. At this club, at this particular time, I think you cannot really judge a coach on just 1 year. This is probably the toughest job in the NRL, Neil Henry might argue with that, especially given what has occurred the previous 2 or 3 years on and off the field. We might find some of the coach's ideas strange at times but why not give them a chance to work, give them time otherwise we'll be on the coaching merry go round, hardly attractive to any coach of stature wanting a position of stability and support.

May I congratulate "Doubles" for the best, most sensible post I have read in ages. This is the kind of basic fact that must be considered before racing off and sacking everybody in order to fix a problem.
I posted a few weeks ago that I had been informed that the NRL squad's condition this year is well in front of where they were at this time last year. If this is true, there may be fewer games, where the team leaks heaps of points in the last twenty minutes.
In addition, a lot of attention is being paid to the tackling technique of individuals and the technique of the group in multiple tackles. It would help to improve the defensive side of our game. If the points for and against for last year were 20 for and 23 against, reducing the points against by 4 this year should produce more wins.

May I congratulate both of you.

That was the mentality of the 2005 Sheens era Tigers. It was the "Ohhh yeah you just put 40 on us so instead of defending better, we'll just score 41." I don't think that it's going to, or has worked like that, for the past 5 years. If we can't defend, then it's going to be the tail wagging the dog. We will haemorrhage points that we won't be able to counter. The last GF winners have won based on strong defense; not razzle dazzle offence.

IMO, The last GFWinners won because Bennett blew it by putting the cue in the rack, and tried to just rely on defence to get him home , rather than play football.

Wow…looks like this thread has turned into the land of pedantic anal retentives...Of course if you score more points than the opposition you win...

Fact of the matter is though that brand of football is hard to maintain for any lenght of time let alone an entrire NRL season....the way the game is referred these days dominace of the ruck field position repeat sets completions and a strong kicking game is required not missing 50 plus tackles a game completing at 60% or less and losing the penalty count...all of which adds pressure to the defensive structures and does not leave a lot in the tank for attack....

The **5 min period before and 5 min period after half time** has cost the team a lot of points.
Maybe the team switches off, and takes a while to switch back on. :crazy
It's been the downfall of many games.
Hopefully this is identified and sorted out, for 2016.
Otherwise it's here we go again. :unamused:

Surely someone can like this to Jason Taylor. The become distracted knowing they are going to have to listen to him, and then take a while to overcome the 1/2 time address.

Also didnt help that Bennetts gun players made some fundamental errors at a crucial time of the game…
remember Hunts error,or was that WBs fault...I would say Bennetts structure was in place, some of the players didnt quite handle the Cows pressure....

It happens a lot. You can't just focus on defence. It doesn't work that way. Its why Taylor ball is losing footy and it's why we had such a bad year last year.

Having a good defence is a huge part of the game. Not attacking at all when you have the ball will always be losing footy especially over the course of a season.

We do have to win the ruck. We do have to work on our defence. At the same time you need to play positive footy when you have the ball. That doesn't mean going for the magic play every tackle but it does mean you can't just do 5 one off the ruck hit-ups and then kick it dead every play.

I think JT learned this lesson last year and changed his approach. You need to be scoring points. You need to defend well. Then hopefully you will win games consistently.

Example: If for the past 2 seasons you finish 13th & 15th but with a points differential of -200 and -300 respectively (average -250) and then finish 15th the following year with a points differential of -75, would it not suggest there has been improvement in the competitiveness of the team despite the position on the ladder? Would I like to see us make the finals with a -100 points diff rather than miss with a points diff of + 100? Of course I would. But the records show your chances are so very much better if the points differential is in the positive. If the team can improve even more in that regard this year, and yes of course you need to score more than the opposition on a consistent basis to do this, than it'll give us a chance of getting there. If we regress back to what occurred in seasons 2013 & 2014 we will not stand a chance. I'm not debating, or trying to "spin", the value of attack or defence but am trying to show through the facts available to me that although you may not have liked the methods Taylor used last season they were to some small degree an improvement on the previous 2 seasons.

WIthin reason all the matters is where you come on the ladder so to answer your question it's clear that last year we performed as bad as we ever has. We went backwards.

It's clear via facts that Taylor's methods failed last year. On the positive side I think he also abandoned the terrible game plans/tactics that he used earlier in the season by the end of the season and we improved.

It's a thing of the past Steve - why do you keep bringing up Taylorball?

Even you have conceded that it was only used in the first half of the season and then put on the shelf. You have said yourself that the Tigers improved after that.

Given that - (personally I thought it was necessary) but why keep draggin' this up when it was a thing of the past. You keep going on about "Spin" yet you have been on here, on countless threads, numerous times spinning away that we have not improved.

Now! Blind Freddie can see by statistics (whether you want to believe them or not) - with / without Taylorball that we improved as a team (any which way you want to look at it) in 2015 over 2013 and 2014\. You obviously watch the games, I gave you credit for knowing the game but you really need to stop moving facts around to agree with your staements. Cricketers call in "Reverse spin" and it is not working.

We were better than the previous 2 years on any number of fronts - you do like sinking the boot into Taylor over Taylorball and with many other comments you make and then come out and say - I think he can do it etc. etc. and then say, or he should be sacked or this will be his last year.

Don't sit on the fence Mate - you are voicing your own opinion (good for you) but either come out and say the guys an idiot we should get rid of him or I think he can turn this team into a finals team - I'll give him all the support I can. You really can't have it both ways.

If you use as the only criteria for improvement the spot you finish in the ladder, well, you are correct we certainly did not improve but in my opinion that is a shortsighted view especially when taking into context the problems that this club has had in recent years. Surely the improvements, if any, were always going to be small and incremental. A jump up the ladder would be great especially if it got us into the finals but that was highly unlikely given the circumstances i.e. the performances the 2 previous years, the inability to compete financially to recruit quality players, the admin' problems, funding, a new coach with new ideas that were always going to take time (only the most fanatical of fans would've expected a finish in the 8 or even close) etc.
