Wests Tigers 2025 - Thrive or Survive Doco

That was a great watch, getting some really good vibes off that. Hard to not get excited, but we'll see what happens.

The key message from that discussion with the red team was that the penny dropped for them that they were the ones who had to set the standards, not the coaching staff. I think we had a little peek inside of what it must have been like in 2024 - with the senior players not happy being called out for not setting the standards. I expect that we now know the reason why we didn't fight to keep Stefano, ICE and Bateman.

Klem was clearly seen at that point in time as being part of the red team as I expect that his value off the field was quite high and he is still peforming at NRL standard - just not at his current salary standard. Therefore, he was probably told that if we would not be allowing him to exercise the option and if he could find a deal to extend his career we wouldn't stand in his way. I don't expect we pushed him, or are pushing him out the door right now.

Really enjoyed watching this. Hope it translates to results on the park. But I do like the approach.

2 great videos showing what they can achieve with a good attitude. This is what i want to see on the field each week.
Kudos to the club for filming it

100%. I loved Benji talk to Turuva, Pole, Galvin and Latu. Also the respect everyone has for Luai speaks massive volumes and can see why he is captain. He is in everything.

Just a very different vibe around the place. Let’s hope it translates into positive results.
Luai, I just love how he has this Cheeky, fun but damnit guys we are going to train hard vibe to him.

There is something in that, people get their energy off communication and tasks... It seems Luai gets his energy from training hard and going at that pace.

I’m really happy the leaders slacked off and got a reality check . It’s just a great message about consistency and leadership and attention to detail . A huge issue with this club has been when the inconsistencies have happened , they’ve been allowed to remain unchallenged .
I thought Benji showed balls in that moment to do that. He could have lost the dressing room by giving them a spray. Weaker men would haven had a dummy spit in that moment ,and played the victim “ I just ran myself in the ground for you , and you come and say that’s not good enough, who cares if we win “.
Our leaders accepted that near enough isnt good enough .
I thought that showed their character more than the “rah rah, let’s do it boys” . To fail , and then kick arse the next day . That’s a good lesson.
Did anyone find it strange that Terrel May wasn't part of the senior group? Or is he still viewed as a 'mid' career player? For the first time since the talk I really appreciated what losing Klemmer might mean, as he was the most vocal forward leader...

Yes, noticed that - also Nanden and Staines despite their seniority. May stikes me as a bit of a doer as opposed to a leader. He will run a line and do a job for 80 minutes and be there for the team but not to lead the team.

Leaders and managers are two different traits
I would take it a step further and say that there are differnet types/styles of leadership that a better suited for different situations and every player can be a leader - just in different ways; especially in a team environment. Benji, in particular, needs to jump in and out of different leadership styles based on the situation.

For example; I would not normally class Bula as a leader however, he demonstrated servant leadership when he put his mates before himself. That is the style of leadership we want in every member of the team (and was part of the purpose of the camp). When we get to where we need to be there should be thirty hands in the air saying - this is on me boys.

Benji was using a Transformational Leadership style at the camp; however, I expect that he, Api and Romey will be utilising a transactional style based on clarity (and honesty as Benji made clear) to clearly establish goals and expectations from less senior members of the team. I could go on but there are around a dozen different leadeship styles that could be utilised.

Thanks. Are these sorts of styles taught in business schools? Really interesting.

Great series and investment in the pre season. They must have done all their fitness training earlier before the camp! That experience of resilience and teamwork will be so valuable when they are in the grind of a match. Feeling good about this season.

I think he’s only been there like a week by that stage . Hard to put him straight into the leadership group
