BEGOVICH WINS U20S STRONGMAN CHALLENGE
By Wayne Cousins
Monday, 25 January 2010
>
Rising prop Neil Begovich has already scored himself ‘bragging rights’ over his team-mates after winning the Wests Tigers U20s Strongman Challenge.
>
More than 30 players were put through a gruelling two hour strength challenge in very humid conditions at Concord on Saturday morning, January 23.
>
Placed in teams, the players were required to undertake a keg throw into a sandpit, flip heavy tyres, push a truck, pull a sled with weights on it, and a farmer’s carry involving a heavy rock and timber logs.
>
“It was a good team bonding exercise and all of the players gave a 100 per cent effort,’’ said Wests Tigers U20s Coach Grant Jones.
>
The winning team comprised of hooker Ellery Wilson, half-back Liam Ayoub, prop Isaac Lui, centre Tim Simona, centre Lance Siataga, utility back Dayne Craig and second-rower Sean Spence.
>
An individual strongman challenge was also held with the finalists being Neil Begovich, Lance Siataga, centre Bodie Clarke, Isaac Lui and Tim Simona.
>
Cheered on by their team-mates, the finalists had to hold a 5kg weight in each hand with their arms stretched out. One by one they dropped off with 'Bing' Begovich holding on to beat Siataga to claim the title.
>
A Camden Rams junior, Begovich played SG Ball for Western Suburbs Magpies in 2009.
