This is a strange one. Is this guy trying to take credit for the NSW COE funding package under the liberals? We had $5.5 mil in there. Or is this extra funding? Federal? How did he secure it without being in power?

Tigers secure future with government grant

The future of the Tigers in Sydney is looking rosier following a $5 million grant from a potentialLabor government.

The Tigers have now raised the $18 million required to build a new Centre of Excellence at Concord Oval, replacing facilities which chairman Barry O'Farrell immediately moved to improve upon being appointed.

"The facilities are substandard and it’s a credit to the boys and the coaching staff that they are performing so well," O'Farrell said.

"As I’ve said before, for a whole variety of reasons, from my perspective, we deserve to give Wests Tigers players the best possible opportunities to deliver on the field, for the fans.

"This commitment by (Labor candidate for Reid) Sam Crosby, for which we are grateful, will be another sign that the Wests Tigers football club is here to stay."

The $5 million pledge by Crosby and a potential Bill Shorten Labor government puts O'Farrell in a precarious position, given he was once NSW Premier as leader of the Liberal party.

The funding promise won't change his vote but it will bring the Tigers onto a level playing field with the rest of the NRL.

"There is no news in who I’m voting for. There is great news in today’s announcement," he said.

"It’s good news for the local community and it’s great news for the men and women who play for the Wests Tigers and for the supporters of the Wests Tigers."

The $18 million project, which is set to begin early next year, will see both grandstands at Concord Oval demolished and rebuilt.

A new Wests Tigers Centre of Excellence will also be built with state-of-the-art training facilities, including a facelift for the change rooms for both men and women will be given a facelift.

There will also be classrooms, a lecture facility, five indoor multi-purpose sports courts and a cafe for community use.

"This has been a priority of the board for some time," O'Farrell said.

"We are delighted with state government support and we are delighted with the additional support from the council, who will manage the project.

"But this $5 million will assist in ensuring this becomes a reality - delivering this community a much needed facility and more importantly, delivering male and female players the facilities they deserve."

The facilities will also be used by West Harbour Rugby Club, Inter Lions Soccer Club and several local junior outfits.

"If you walk through the facilities here, I don’t think it’s wrong to say that for a team of the stature and the history and the prominence of the Tigers - the training facilities just aren’t up to scratch," Crosby said.

"We need to bring them into the 21st century as a community.

"As soon as I was pre-selected the Tigers were on the phone, having meetings, grabbing me at every possible opportunity to say we need some extra funding to make this thing go, to make this thing live.

"I don’t mind saying that I called in every favour and pulled every string I possibly could to get this funding today."

@mike Very true.

So, from what I can make heads and tails of all this, we currently have $40.5 million in grants from Govt.

- $30m from Canada Bay Council (Via the NSW Liberal Govt) - http://www.canadabay.nsw.gov.au/redevelopment-of-concord-oval.html
- $5.5m from the NSW Liberal Govt in the COE funding proposal https://sport.nsw.gov.au/aboutus/OOS/SIG/CentresExcellenceProgram
- $5m from the Federal Labor Government (BIG IF they get into power AND manage to pass this measure)

**Total $40.5m**

The original proposal was for **$57m**

So there is a shortfall there of **$17.5mil**?

There is a mention in the article of the "The Tigers have now raised the $18 million required to build a new Centre of Excellence at Concord Oval". Maybe we've also acquired $18 mil privately on top of the above?

All very confusing.

Wests Tigers secure further funding commitment for Centre of Excellence

Wests Tigers have today announced that the club has secured a further commitment of funding for the club’s Centre of Excellence Project at Concord Oval.

Liberal candidate for Reid Dr. Fiona Martin today confirmed that a re-elected Morrison Government will provide $5 million for the re-development of Concord Oval – including the Wests Tigers Centre of Excellence — as well as an additional $1 million to be provided over two years to establish a new “Cubs” engagement program supporting multicultural youth.

The Cubs Program funding will assist the Wests Tigers to engage youth from culturally diverse or disadvantaged backgrounds, develop their knowledge of Rugby League, build positive social outcomes and help them to become leaders in their communities.

Wests Tigers Chair Barry O'Farrell said the funding agreement secured today will officially guarantee that both Wests Tigers and the local community will receive the much-needed facilities they deserve.

“On behalf of all at Wests Tigers, I’d like to first thank the Liberal National Government for their support and commitment to this project,” said Mr O’Farrell. “This is wonderful news for all involved in the club and the community as a whole.”

“Wests Tigers is an extremely proud club with strong history of producing local talent, and this continued commitment to the club’s Academy programs will only strengthen that moving forward.

“Today is another bright day for Wests Tigers that further ensures the long-term future and growth of this great club,” said Mr O’Farrell.

Liberal candidate for Reid Dr Fiona Martin said the Wests Tigers are located in one of the most vibrant and multicultural areas in Sydney, making them a perfect fit to attract potential participants to the program.

“The Wests Tigers are an integral part of our community here in Reid, and I’m proud that we are backing them in,” Dr Martin said.

“I am very proud of our support for this program, which will help the kids from our multicultural communities to participate in something that unites all Australians — sport. It will support the kids to maintain a healthy lifestyle, help them to integrate and build local friendships; while also helping our Wests Tigers to build even stronger links with the members of our community.”

Following a thorough design process with support from the City of Canada Bay and the NSW Government, construction on the new Wests Tigers Centre of Excellence is expected to begin in early 2020 with an official opening midway through 2021.

The redevelopment will include high performance training and rehabilitation facilities, sports science, medical and conditioning facilities, aquatic recovery and hydrotherapy pools, education facilities including integrated learning spaces, classrooms and lecture facilities and multi-sport community facilities and social spaces.

Thats great to get the pledge from both sides of fed govt. We've been fighting with one arm tied behind or backs for too long.

I recall the PCYC was also going to chip in. Not sure how much, maybe around 5 mil?

The rest was made up by us/private investors. Harry? My Brydens?

@Balmain_Boy Well yeah, PCYC certainly were named initially.

Maybe the Wests Tigers foundation fund will go some way to covering certain costs also, like gym fitout.

Didn't I also read somewhere that the Leagues Club was taking off again?? Or that wishful thinking??

Sorry to dig this topic up again.

Has their been any traction with our proposed Centre Of Excellence ?

Will be disappointment if this still remains on our “wish list “ rather than a reality
