Wests Tigers are pleased to confirm the club’s Knock-On NSW Cup squad for 2022, with Wayne Lambkin named as coach for the upcoming season.

Lambkin — the club’s former Jersey Flegg coach — will oversee the reserve grade side, which will wear the Western Suburbs Magpies colours again in 2022.

After a strong season that saw the team second on the ladder when the competition was halted in 2021, the Magpies will be hoping for another impressive campaign with a number of new local juniors promoted to the squad.

Nine of the NSW Cup squad members are on NRL train-and-trial deals and are currently training with the NRL squad for pre-season.

2021 Jersey Flegg Player of the Year Rua Ngatikaura has been promoted to the reserve grade squad, alongside Wests Tigers juniors Ben Stevanovic, Logen Dillion and Liam Scolari.

After making his NRL debut in 2021, Junior Pauga has been included in the squad, and will play alongside the likes of Israel Ogden, Edenn Rogers-Smith and Tom Freebairn.

2022 NSW Cup squad
NRL train-and-trial players: Ben Stevanovic, Billy Stapleton, Christian Ma’anaima, Iversoon Fuatimau, Junior Pauga, Liam Scolari, Logen Dillion, Rua Ngatikaura, Tom Freebairn.

NSW Cup contracts: Jimmy Ngutlik, Israel Ogden, Joseph Tapauri, Aden Perry, Edenn Rogers-Smith, Atitasi James, Sione Tupou, Felix Smith.

Extended squad: D’Rhys Miller, Kel O’Brien, Mateo Tatola.

Mateo Tatola back at the Club. He is Junior's younger brother and had a very good junior rep record. He joined the Bulldogs from Balmain so it is good to see another junior back at the Club.

They all initially were from the dogs jrl
Holy X offered them all incentives

I’ve been watching the game long enough to not pay attention till they hit first grade. If I had a dollar for all the names of juniors I have heard people get excited for over the years, I’d be a millionaire

You mean Neil Begovich didn't have a successful career !?

I hear you....
This kid has all the tools to be the next Papenhauyzen though.

Keep an eye out.
He's no Cini.

Our Cup team will do well next year.

Begovich, John Grant, Matt Groat, just to name a few. Don’t get me wrong, not death riding the kid, I hope he becomes the next Tedesco. But I’ll reserve my judgement.

So how many from the lower grades did we actually lose that we wish we kept?

Tuifua to dogs. Sykes to Penrith. And we didn't offer contracts to Jordan Hill or EJ Lui for some reason. But largely kept most of them

Wests Tigers juniors Tumeth and Matamua selected for Future Blues

Wests Tigers duo Brandon Tumeth and Justin Matamua will have the chance to learn off some of the best minds in rugby league after being selected to join next month’s Future Blues camp.

Balmain junior Tumeth and Wests junior Matamua have been standouts over the past couple of seasons and have been rewarded for their excellence.

https://www.weststigers.com.au/news/2021/11/20/wests-tigers-juniors-tumeth-and-matamua-selected-for-emerging-blues/

Gotta say I’m a bit jealous of Manly’s juniors , due to injuries in the backrow in 2021 now they already with first grade experience and showed they are quality. (Latu Fainu, Haumole Olakau’atu, Josh Schuster , Saab)

Hopefully Tumeth and Malamua make the transition just as well.

…………………
NSW coaches - The camp will be run by NSW State of Origin coach Brad Fittler and his assistants Paul McGregor and Danny Buderus.
Blues legnends Andrew Johns and Boyd Cordner will also be involved as well as State of Origin high performance and medical staff.

This would be one of the best backlines we have fielded in NSW Cup/KOE. I can't wait to watch Ngutlik, the big fast PNG winger. The young props are also very good.

Ogden
Scolari
Stevanovic

Props Rogers-Smith, Smith and young Tupou

That back 5 would be exciting to watch! I am with you and keen to see Ngutlik get a good crack in the side! Realistically though, you will probably see 2 of our Top 30 in Gildart, Hoffman, Kei or Kepaoa somewhere in that lineup (except when injuries hit).
