Wests Tigers looking to shed veteran big men

I would (to put it nicely), look at finalising the contracts of Meaney, Beau Ryan, Flanagan, Shirnack & Moors if we need cash to sign Blair.

Gibbs was awesome last year. As good as any prop in the comp and the game he played against the Dragons in the Semi's will forever live in my mind.

He and Fulton came from Wests 2002 SG Ball side. It will be a benefit to keep them forever as we will get special dispensation soon.

I hope its all false, but I would be gutted if these blokes have to leave.

Agree with Bug. There are many others we can offload before Gibbs especially. Gibbs is a must retain imo. He just seems to get better with age.

Like most on here I could handle losing Fults & Payto. But would struggle losing Gibbs.

But in saying that retaining the likes of Dwyer, Woods, Fifita, BMM & Groat are essential for the clubs future development.

This is obviously a very difficult situation for the Club. Keep players who have served the club well and lose young players from our system or keep the players and lose the young stars. If the decision to offload the three players has been made then this seems to continue the clubs youth policy.

On the players, yes Todd is nearing retirement so fair enough. I rate Gibbs, however would you want him at the club in two years at 29 or Adam Blair at 27? Again I like Fulton but to me he is not an impact player and I would have Dywer, Ellis and Heighinton all starting ahead of him.

Keeping Woods, BMM and Fifita is important given their age and ability. Letting go Flanagan, Moors and Shirnack will not free up enough money to keep them, other clubs are going to prepared overs for these players. Whilst we will most likely not have to match the other offers we need to be in the ball park. Look at the Sandow situation.

We cannot keep everyone unfortunately and I'm glad I don't make these decisions.

Looking long term to have Blair, Woods, Fifita and BMM in two years seems a better position than keeping Fulton, Gibbs and Payten.

I agree with Smeghead & Alexaki, how can players be loyal when the clubs cant? Fulton went for a year to england to help us out with the cap & both he & Gibbs have been playing injured to help us out with all our injuries. These players have signed new contracts & are good players who dont deserve this. Also is Blair going to sign with us or is he using us? as this is draging on to long.

i agree with you guys here. seems very strange to get rid of these guys if they can fit under the long term concessions. i get the feeling they are well liked by all the players at the club too. didnt massoud also say something about roosters making a last ditch play for blair?

Long term concessions and an increase aren't here yet.

Do we looks young guns hoping an arrangement appears down the track,

Woods Fafita, Groat Miller, Lui etc are our future.

This is Brycee Gibbs response to this mornings story

seems like he has no idea about it at this stage, i think it's all a load of crap, the daily crapegraph have no sources only apparent "insiders"

I would be sorry to see these stalwarts of the club leave, especially Fulton, he can fill many different positions in the team, although he is inclined to be injury prone - but I guess to make way for some of the young guys to step up, this will have to happen. However I hope these revelations do not disrupt our season. 😢

Well whether it's crap or not - surely it must be disruptive for the team ? Whether Gibbs is playing dumb or not who knows with his comment ?

I doubt a club who only just extended someones contract, a year before it was even up is going to tell them sorry mate you got to go, i'm not sure on the club's postion towards fulton and payten, but to do such a backflip sounds very out of character to me.

When was the last time you saw Bryce Gibbs break the line? Everyone seems to like him because he does a lot of cleaning up in defense. Isn't that a backrowers job?

I like Bryce, but have often been frustrated with his lack of impact and ability to cut into the opposition defensive line. Personally, even though he has another 5 years experience under his belt, I think O'Meally would still put him on his arse if it came to a one on one style bash and barge.

Keep him, I'm happy. Let him go, I am happy. Lose BMM, Fifita or Woods because we kept him then I am not happy.

The CEO and Sheens have to try and assemble the very best squad of players, stay within the bounds of the cap and maintain a mix of exciting players for the future and hard nosed experience players who will get the job done . Its all about winning, thats what generates the dollars for the club.

For Gibbs and Fulton its probably a good time to be in the market place, they are probably in a good position to get a fair bit more money and if the right offer dosnt come through they still have their contract at the tigers.

In reality if we got two of the players the Tele-crap was throwing around we would do well, but to retain the young ones their will have to be some other players shown the door and to think by cutting a lot of the fringe 1st graders will do the trick your dreaming, most them would be on low base contracts with high incentive payments for 1st grade appearances and win bonuses.

The very good teams know when its time to make hard decisions

Wow this article and really stirred up some emotion.

I agree with most people's comments that we should try and keep Gibbs and Fulton who have come through the ranks.

Payten should retire and take up a coaching role. Maybe he could sign on for $1.00 like Skando did and play if there is an injury crisis.

I would prefer to lose Flanagan, Moors, Daniela, Meaney, Ryan, Utai and any other fringe players off contract. I would even let Moltzen walk given he will not play 5/8 whilst Marshall is around.

I hope we also find some cash to keep Mitch Brown. He is only young and could develop into a fine player.
Big, strong and fast, Seems to lack confidence in his ability.

I would prefer Gibbs over Fulton as he adds so much to our defensive line. Why can't Gibbs play second row now we have props like Galloway, Fifita, Woods, BMM, Groat, Blair (if we sign him) and if we have injuries to props Gibbs can step up.

Props seem to get better as they age. i.e Webhe, Brick with Ears, Petro, Price, etc.

Why get rid of Gibbs who we have developed only to see another club prosper.

We need a mixture of Experience and Youth.

I know we can't keep everyone but surely if Canterbury, Easts and Titans can stay under the salary cap with all their signings we should be able to as well or sack our Accountants and get new ones.

I hope like most fans that we are not being used by Blair to bump up his money and lose Gibbs and Fulton in the meantime for no reason. I won't be happy.

Massoud makes things up….he hasn't even got his facts on the terms of their current deals

I recognise the importance of re-signing and retaining the likes of Fifita, Woods and Groat, all 3 could become dominant rep standard front rowers in the years to come, but offloading Gibbs and Fulton seems a bit premature to me. Both players are around 27 years old, they still have at least 3 good years left in them provided no major injuries are suffered.

Payten on the other hand I understand, he's 32 and struggling with injury at the moment, but like others have mentioned, I'd be letting go of the likes of Moors, Flanagan and Daniela who are all off-contract at the end of this season, plus I'd let Ryan go and look at using the likes of Faleula Finau, Limoni Kamuta, Tim Simona and Ratu Tagive as outside backs for depth next year.

A lot may depend of whether the Tigers sign Adam Blair and how much coin they offer him in regards to the possible offloading of Fulton and Gibbs - if the story is true.

The moment I read about Groat and they left out Begovich, I just pressumed this article was bogus…

He probably got it from here somewhere?!

If it is true I think its a good thing for all parties, I lovr gibbs and fulton but with the players coming through and if we sign blair they both will be lucky to be sitting on the bench. They are both great players and I think if they go and payten retires we will be ina hole in the forwards for a year or two, but the way these young guys are playing and developing, they are developing alot quicker then what fulton and gibbs have. Represetnitive honours for fults and gibbs are becoming less of a chance after every season and woods bmm and fifita are already being linked to future origin players etc. its a short term pain until the cap is raised and then the $$$ should be able to accomadate this team till they all retire…... but in saying that I still would like to see fulton and gibbs see out there contracts.

I have changed my mind after a walk through Hyde park and being smashed by the wind.

Cheat the Salary cap, Probably wont get caught and this way we get to keep all our favourites.
