Wests Tigers recorded their fifth consecutive win in the U20s competition with a tough 34-22 victory over St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Jubilee Oval today.
The win entrenches Wests Tigers in the top eight on 16 competition points.
Wests Tigers Coach Grant Jones made two changes to his team. Western Suburbs Magpies SG Ball player David Nofoaluma made his NYC debut, replacing winger Limoni Kamuta while Kyle Lovett started on the interchange bench for Faleula Finau.
Wests Tigers opened the scoring in the 8th minute when prop Neil Begovich dived over under the posts from a short pass from hooker Pat Politoni. Half-back Jacob Miller converted for a 6-0 lead.
The Dragons got on the board when a grubber kick 10 metres from the tryline saw Wests Tigers full-back Justin Smith slip over in trying to ground the ball only for second-rower Ben Musolino to place a hand on the ball to score. Centre Kane Gillies converted the try for a 6-6 scoreline after 15 minutes.
St George-Illawarra went to a 10-6 lead in the 21st minute when winger Ty Grout dived over in the right corner. Gillies failed to convert the try.
Nofoaluma celebrated his first try in the U20s when he scored behind the posts to finish off a 40 metre backline play in the 28th minute. Miller converted the try for a 12-10 lead.
Wests Tigers went to a 16-10 lead in the 38th minute when Fijian winger Marika Koroibete raced 50 metres to score under the posts after second-rower Shaun Spence offloaded a quick pass following a drop ball by the Dragons. Miller converted the try to give Wests Tigers an 18-10 lead at half-time.
2nd Half
A short grubber kick from Miller in the 47th minute saw the Dragons fumble the ball to allow centre Matt Evans to score to give Wests Tigers a 22-10 lead. Miller failed to convert the try.
Evans blew a certain Wests Tigers try in the 54th minute when he failed to offload inside to a flying Koroibete who would have easily outpaced the defence. Evans held onto the ball and was taken into touch.
Five minutes later, Evans made up for his mistake when he put through a short grubber kick just inside the Dragons quarter with the ball bouncing up for full-back Justin Smith to score under the posts. Miller converted the try for a 28-10 lead after 60 minutes.
The Dragons got back to 28-14 when replacement forward Michael Bullock crashed over next to the posts. Gillies converted the try to leave the Dragons trailing 28-16 after 64 minutes.
Two minutes later, Dragons lock Alex McKinnon finished off a backline play when he crashed over near the posts. Gillies converted the try for a 28-22 scoreline after 69 minutes.
Fortunately for Wests Tigers, Spence was able to pick up a loose pass from McKinnon on their tryline in the 73rd minute.
The next set saw Politoni put through a smart kick behind the defence on the last tackle to force the Dragons into a goal line drop out.
The pressure paid off when lock Jesse Sue powered his way over next to the posts to score in the 75th minute to give Wests Tigers a 32-22 lead. Miller converted the try for a 34-22 lead after 76 minutes.
Wests Tigers now play Newcastle Knights at Leichhardt Oval on Monday, June 6.
