Wests Tigers draw 28-28 with Bulldogs in NYC trial at Belmore
Wests Tigers produced a strong comeback to record a 28-all draw with Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Belmore Sports Ground tonight in an NYC trial.
With no goal kicks being taken in the match, both teams scored 7 tries each in an entertaining trial.
Led by classy centre/full-back Manaia Rudolph, Wests Tigers overcame a 16-4 deficit at the end of the first 30 minute period to trail 24-16 after the second period.
The third and final period saw Wests Tigers level at 24-all before the Bulldogs scored with 11 minutes remaining for a 28-24 scoreline. Wests Tigers drew level through a try to Rhys Mclaren with four minutes remaining.
Rudolph- the leading NYC pointscorer of the year in 2012 – again showed his fine attacking skills by cutting the Bulldogs defence apart with some decisive runs. He will be looking to secure a permanent spot again in the NYC team after missing out on the finals series last year when Coach Todd Payten dropped him from the team because of his defence.
First period
Wests Tigers opened the scoring in the third minute with a try to winger Maile Li off a short kick in-goal by half Billy Kitt. Wests Tigers 4-0.
The Bulldogs applied some pressure inside the Wests Tigers quarter but a grubber kick on the last in the 10th minute was well picked up in-goal by full-back Delouise Hoeter.
The pressure told though from the re-start when a nice short ball by Bulldogs five-eighth Luke Vella saw second-rower Shaun Lane stroll. Bulldogs 4 Wests Tigers 4.
Two minutes later, a break down the left flank by Bulldogs winger Dylan Rintoul saw him link up with half-back Jaelen Feeney for a try after 13 minutes. Bulldogs 8 Wests Tigers 4.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-1 when Feeney crashed through the defence out wide in the 23rd minute. Bulldogs 12 Wests Tigers 4.
It could have been 16-4 after 26 minutes if it wasn't for a trysaving tackle by centre Manaia Rudolph after the Bulldogs swooped on a loose ball from Wests Tigers and race 60 metres downfield.
The Bulldogs did stretch it to 16-4 on the siren when the ball was spread right for winger Pio Seci to dive over in the corner.
2nd Period
The Bulldogs went to a 20-4 lead in the third minute of the second period through a try to Sam Barclay.
Wests Tigers scored their second try of the game when winger Harry Grove finished off a pass from full-centre turned full-back Manaia Rudolph to dive over in the left corner to leave his team trailing 20-8 after 15 minutes.
Five minutes later, Rudolph swooped on a drop ball to split the defence to race 70 metres to score untouched under the posts for a 20-12 scoreline.
Wests Tigers got back to 20-16 in 26th minute when second-rower Salesi Funaki ran onto the ball powerfully to crash over the line.
The Bulldogs crashed over next to the posts with 15 seconds remaining through George Tsikrikas for a 24-16 scoreline at the end of the second period.
3rd period
A spilt ball by the Bulldogs in-goal from a short grubber kick saw Wests Tigers winger Leva Li place his hands on the ball for an easy try in the 7th minute for a 24-20 scoreline to Canterbury.
Wests Tigers drew level at 24-24 in the 11th minute of the third period when Rudolph attacked the line before popping a short pass for centre Nathan Milone to score.
Some desperate defence by Wests Tigers held a Bulldogs forward up over the line with 16 minutes remaining. The Bulldogs got a repeat set of six when Delouise Hoeter was trapped in goal.
The Bulldogs looked set to score in the next set through full-back Costner Lemafa but he was taken into touch by some scrambling defence by Rhys Mclaren and Leva Li.
Canterbury regained the lead with 11 minutes remaining when centre Ryan Wilson finished off a backline play to score out wide to give the Bulldogs a 28-24 lead.
Wests Tigers drew level with five minutes remaining when Mclaren scored off a crossfield kick for a 28-28 scoreline.
