Wests Tigers relocate to Perth?

Benny Elias's latest comments about how dysfunctional wests tigers are, have got me thinking about Wests Tigers future in general..

He is heavily involved in the perth bid for a NRL license, i even saw him at a wanderers game eating a meat pie with the millionaire Tony sage, the perth glory Owner…

it would make sense though logically?

1)Wests tigers can maintain there name and brand
2)WT would have more money then they do now
3)No more balmain v maggies conflict
4)NRL will support any expansion moves and assist financially, plus there would be one less sydney team
5)Tigers would have the entire state of WA in regards to its juniors...
6)Attract players, perth is really nice compared to Cambletown or Leichhardt

At the rate we are going, with poor crowds, shocking playing roster, bad admin and the likes of the Evil benny elias hovering around the wests tigers... im not entirely convinced that we will be around in the current format...

Anyway, lets hope i'm wrong.. but sometimes you gotta read in between the lines...

If the WT move to Perth, that would break my heart...

so ur saying balmain move to perth and set up as west tigers. as part of ur 1-6 comments.
and its not as dumb as it sounds.

Would not it be better and easier if benny elias got out of this conflict of interest he is currently involved in and had nothing to do with Wests Tigers??

Ben Elias is fast becoming a goose in the same ilk as Mundine, if you want a controversial answer he seems to be the current go to man, as much as I loved Benny as a player it was nearly 30 years ago and apart from the mess he left Balmain in it's time to 'shut the F$%k up'!.

Will not happen full stop. Yes the NRL would like a team in Perth, but not the WestsTigers. The only Sydney based team at present the NRL would like to relocate would be maybe the Sharks due to their geographical location. Their idea on expansion, is a new club, a new identity and not a re branded and relocated existing club.

As for Benny nobody takes him seriously these days

Being an out of state rural fan that never really had ties to Sydney and only support the club because I saw them on TV when I was a kid and felt sorry for them I'm not going to be irrationally against any such moves. There is definite upside to moving to Perth but it can and WILL kill of a hell of a lot of league supporters.

There are countless Jets and Bears supporters that just lost interest in the sport when they went and it would happen to our fans even worse because our fans are jaded from the merger as it is. I know many of you would never support a Wests Tigers Perth based franchise and I don't blame you and I don't expect you all to just suddenly start supporting Parramatta or Canterbury or Penrith if it does happen. Many will move to the Wanderers or the Giants. Some will adopt another club. Some will keep supporting WT without their heart being in it.

On the other side, there is a HUGE customer base there for them already so does it really matter if they lose you all? It could turn WT into the next Melbourne. The baby of the league. NRL doing all they can to see them succeed. One city club.

Or could it kill the club in five years when they go the way of the Reds because Perth just isn't viable?

So many questions.

Mac… tell me a new Perth based fan would have the fortitude to stomach the lean times like a Magpies fan?

Balmain is sending the feelers out to Perth, not the Wests side. Balmain is praying for a hail mary from it all, rather than addressing the issues.

Move my Magpies (now the Wests Tigers) again, that will be 3rd time in my life, (as it stands Lidcombe to Campo, enforced a merge, then Perth) add that to a move from Pratten and Rugby League can go fork itself. Neverlone the Balmain fans who cannot find their way to a park that isnt Leichhardt.

My 15 month old has 2 official wests tigers jerseys, 2 beanies, and 2 other official Tigers supporters shirts. I have converted a daughter of a Rooter and Dog to a Tiger, and am working hard on 2 cousins to my son. Fanatics inspire others. A cross country move will amputate even their most loyal.

Go further to say league does this to me again, I would spill blood to make sure they understood.

Probably not but I reckon if we moved to Perth we would "miraculously" be competition heavyweights instantly like some other club we know …

Who would look after the vast Campelltown area?

Maybe they could just re-establish the Magpies and move Balmain to Perth. Or turn one of the other clubs into a Western Sydney franchise.

As the name states, Im Black and White… but to further tear the heart out of the Balmain people, even at the opportunity to bring my own team back, I would tell you to go and......

Not disrespecting you as a fan, nor to negate you as a passionate supporter of the club and team, but I dont think you understand. I wear heritage jerseys, my Mrs the converted Panther a Wests tigers kit, same as my son.

Some of us are bound by geographical ties, and those that are have been served bitter pills already. Even if we deny it, we all still turn today depending on rugby league political climate at the time. Magpies and Tigers alike, can look into the eyes of elder Souths fans and find kin... You bought into something big, as old as the game itself and may not have realised. Between the factions which are now the Wests Tigers, we have something that should be never taken away, and should never be allowed to be either.

A move to the West? Yeah just ask the Western Force - what a success story in Rugby…Not!

"5)Tigers would have the entire state of WA in regards to its juniors..." along with Freo, West Coast, Western Force & Perth Glory ... duh!

Benny Elias? Why would anyone support a scheme that he's involved with? He's a shonk! If Benny wasn't involved I might be interested. Now that I live in Adelaide a trip across the Nullabor isn't so daunting but ta ta to the East Coast supporters.

Oh and I will be flying into Sydney for the Cowboys game at Leichhardt in a couple of weeks thanks to the NRL finally scheduling games on specific days so I could buy a discount airfare knowing the actual day the game was on.

I totally agree with Mac.. a lot of supporters would loose interest in the game.. I could never support another club….. and if i cant take my kids to a tigers home game, then whats the point..

Overall.. i wouldnt be surprised if the likes of Benny are contemplating the idea, look what he did with Balmain Leagues, you can't trust the bloke.. I just dont see why would Benny come out and make such comments...

In the 1980's and early 1990's.... if someone told me Balmain would merge with wests... i wouldnt have believed it...

RL is a business, teams come and go.. i just hope the Tigers dont get done...

I think Benny's idea has some merit but i dont think any team relocating there is the answer. The reason why Melbourne has worked is because it was started built and developed in Melbourne. The fans took to them because they were started locally. As well as that, they are owned by News Limited who have the best interest of the game at heart instead of a millionaire who is generally doing it as an ego trip.

If the NRL wants a team in Perth, I suggest they put together a 10 year plan. The first thing I would do is start looking at building a strong junior competition there. I'd even entice some NRL teams to set up nurseries there and cherry pick who they want, much like what they do with some NSW and QLD country teams. When their juniors have a strong competition, let them form a reserve grade side then the following year invite them into the NRL.

I think starting from the top and especially relocating a team is headed for failure from the start. Have a look at the Northern Eagles debacle. The Central Coast dont want a consolation team, they want their OWN team. If you have a strong junior base feeding your NRL team, Rugby League will survive in any new area.
