Wests Tigers sign James Roberts till 2022

I really want him to come good - not sure why but just want him to be a good news story. Never really got many opportunities last year and not expecting miracles, just a positive contribution.

I have no issue with Hames Roberts getting a crack on a train and trial contract. The issue we have is plenty of cap space and not enough quality first graders and virtually no centres.

Roberts is a depth player at best we need two starting centres. Simple as that it’s our biggest weakness.

Reports saying James Roberts has been offered a train & trial contact on $1000 pw.

But he already had a contract for next year. Club option I know but why say no we don’t want you on that and offer a train and trail. Makes no sense

I would say that the club does not think he is worth what the option dictates he would get so they declined it.This way we would get him on a cheaper contract because lets be honest he did nothing this year that was worth perservering with.

But why would James take that. It would be like your employer saying look you’re no good a your job but we like you so we will keep you are doing this other job for half the pay. Surely you’d say thanks but no thanks

No one else wants him though.

I don’t know how you break it to the team but we need to build a ‘nobody else wanted us’ mentality when we take the field.

Surely everyone can see now that Roberts has no value for us and should not be re-signed under any circumstances.

I think the fact we have just started up with the indigenous pathways, it would not be a good look, he will probably add value to that in the long term?

Tigers need to be more one eyed about why they exist. Programs schmograms.

Half the pay?
"Reports saying James Roberts has been offered a train & trial contact on $1000 pw."
Per week, $1000. for James Roberts?
This is insanely good for the club.

I do wonder how that effects James. I thought James was a player that needed a home and would be a loyal Clubman... Although the pressure may drive him OR break him.
Like people have said, he has underperformed. He has also been injured.

But if he is on $1000pw (sounds way to cheap), he has stuffed up behind the scenes.

So much potential with that player, in form he is a gun. Yet he is very Todd Carneyish. Wrong week and you have to fire him.

I don’t care if he is on 30 bucks a year, he is taking up a valuable contract spot that could be used to sway a young kid with a potentially high ceiling to our club. Jet is probably a top guy with some problems, but his days as a NRL footballer are shot. Sure give him a role with our indigenous system, but don’t block a roster position

It is a train and trial contract, he isn't taking anyone's spot.

Not yet

Is it true that the club option was $500k?
Did we offer a lower contract for the first year with promise of a bigger pay in the second year if we decided to take him on again?

This program hasn't been running that long and to be honest I couldn't care less if it didn't lead to any players. Football clubs can be inspirational in the community and they should harness that to improve their community.

There was a second year to be triggered if he reached certain KPIs which he didn't reach. it was for an increased value but nowhere near $500k. I think the $500k they are reporting is his old Broncos or Rabbits deal.

Do we have a community? As in a location that identifies with the club? I think it's set up to look like we're doing the right thing.

That all makes sense then. Well it will be interesting to see if he takes up the train and trial. Will give him a full time job (training and playing) but I wonder if there will be conditions on the train and trial deal that will guarantee promotion to the first grade side by a certain stage of the year?

Its just not true though, I have been involved in Panthers on the Prowl for example and it is a crucial initiative that does a lot for the Penrith community. Still was an incredibly successful initiative even when they aren't winning Premierships.

Roberts has played 11 games for the Tigers.

Doesn't seem like an ideal extension as we need FG ready centres desperately and he struggles to even make it on the field.

If it's cheap then it isn't the worst....
However extremely underwhelming.

Recruitment for 2022 has been very poor.

That is actually not true either, when Gus was appointed to be the General Manager of football at Penrith he made the decision that other aspects of the club needed fixing and took on a much larger role than was 1st expected. He was involved in the Leagues Club issues and community programs as well.

I think we are doing really smart things in our appointments in Pathways and Sheens every expanding role. There is nothing wrong with having community programs running well as well.
