Wests Tigers Stat to Fix: Metres per carry

My expectations at the moment are we aren’t better than last year in the forwards for 2021 and it will be a year of typical ups and downs.

- Joe had a bad season last year
- Garner went backwards
- we lost Josh, Eiso & Macca 3 players who did have a dig last year
- Tamou is an improvement on Josh but all other additions are potential, not proven and lack the weekly run.
- If Joe fires and gets hungry he will be better than Eiso
- Stefano, Simpkins are unknown and at the same place Macca was before he hit his straps.
- If Twal & Musgrove stay injury free will be a huge positive and gains.

For me setting expectations low as they will need time to gel, know each other and the kids will need some miles in the legs.

The stat to fix is the metres we concede up the middle.

Has been a problem for years. No line speed and plenty of post contact metres allowed

Yep, you've got to meet them to beat them, and all too often we wait for them. It just becomes like an elastic band being stretched back until it breaks.

Happens around Rd 10-11 most seasons with us

Yeap hence why I worry that for 2021 our forward pack won’t be better as the inexperienced players will start to struggle then.

Hopefully I’m wrong but we see it every year

I am hoping Tamou will add a lot with his carries and leadership and I am tipping Joffa will be a real force for us, and may even prove to be “the buy of the season”. Musgrove needs to be able to play more minutes in top gear to add further go forward. I expect that we’ll also get improvement from Garner, Blore and the inclusion of Stef in the mix at some point.
I have been saying for some time that we are short one more quality forward - probably a lock, but maybe a second rower in the Angus Chrichton mould. Needs to be a guy that gives 110% and leads the younger boys by example. Brando Smith (who I don’t feel would come to us) or McInnes are great options as well.
Not sure who else might be available with those attributes, but just would love to fill the hole in our pack with that type of player. Support for Tamou in lifting our young guys who have so much potential would go a long way for us.

I don't think he was or is the answer. We need a top tier forward. Someone like Angus Crichton would be great.

I can't see us getting a forward like that and I think we will have to try and develop one.

It’s an important statistic but they need to drill it down to middle forwards. Kick pressure and kick returns with a gun fullback will make this measure redundant.

So true, this is why a decent fullback is crucial in the modern game, and halves that get repeat sets also.Without this the forwards get gassed with to big a workload. The kicking game of the top sides was far superior to ours .

The roosters are trying to retain him with St George are going hard for Angus. We should as well. Strike first, strike hard no mercy.(sorry couldn’t help myself)
He would be would make a massive difference to our chances of making finals.

He would be perfect for us but I don't think we'd get him and I'd be careful about how much you offer him. He is top tier though and we should go for him. The more we go at players the more their club has to pay to retain them.

I agree that its a long shot. The odds are that he resigns with the Roosters. If we (and St G) make a sizeable offer if forces the Roosters to spend big to retain him like what happen at Penrith with the other Crichton.

For mine, these articles are pretty useless.

Not making metres usually means you're struggling somewhere else.

For example, if you've knocked on or gave away penalties and are tanked from defending against a team that has 70% possession, even the best forwards are going to struggle to get yardage.
