Wests Tigers are parting company with general manager of football Kelly Egan in a further shake-up of their football department.

Just six months after Michael Maguire was appointed as the replacement coach for Ivan Cleary, there will be a further change in the brains trust of the football department with the departure of Egan. Long-time chair Marina Go also recently stepped down, her role filled by former NSW premier Barry O’ Farrell.

Egan had previously worked with Des Hasler as an assistant at Canterbury and Manly, after a stint as the general manager of football at North Queensland. He has worked closely with the last three Tigers coaches in assembling the roster currently at Maguire’s disposal.

He joined the Tigers when the club was in protracted and public negotiations with the so-called ‘Big Four’ of Aaron Woods, Mitchell Moses, James Tedesco and Luke Brooks, with only the latter staying put.

The departure of the former Junior Kangaroos coach provides the joint-venture outfit an opportunity to take a different approach to retention and recruitment under Maguire.

The development comes just weeks after a series of mass sackings in the Canterbury football department. Team manager Andrew Farrar, general manager of football Gareth Holmes, recruitment boss Warren McDonnell and pathways performance manager Andrew Patmore were all big-name casualties in a restructure of the Bulldogs

Obviously Maguire is not happy with the recruitment and the squad he inherited

Seems like a cleanout of the roster is on the horizon

There has to be if we are to be competitive with the top 4 or 5 teams - clearly.

Agree. Hopefully we get it right this time round if it does happen.

Interesting.

As others have said I wonder whether he will be replaced or Madge will spearhead it all.

I see positives in the coach making the calls directly but also think it would be good to have a buffer there to ensure the coach doesn't chuck a Des and drive us into a cap pit, although it could be argued some of our big buys purchased under that recruitment model have already come back to bite us on the arse..

Apart from Ryan Matterson, can’t recall a decent signing under his reign....

Twal, Aloiai Thompson ...?

I would suggest we need 3- coach, manager of football and CEO. I find it incredible that we fans can identify that WT have lacked, and continue to lack big, fast wingers when everyone else has them. Why has WT not gone that way and kept with smaller wingers- where is the critical examination of team deficiencies compared to the competitors and top 4 competitors?

I know the nay sayers will say how do I know that WT havent tried? Answer obviously is I dont know, but to look at results over the past few years of recruitment and retention- we have let such players go and not really tried to hard too get similar players in return.
