Wests Tigers to shift Benji Marshall in to custodians role

THERE are plans at Wests Tigers to turn the world's best five-eighth Benji Marshall into a fullback and blood the son of club legend Paul Sironen.

Four-time premiership-winning coach Tim Sheens rates schoolboy five-eighth Curtis Sironen so highly that the teenager may even get a taste of NRL before the end of the year.

At 17, Sironen is 193cm and 92kg and has been a standout in the Toyota Cup under-20s side for 12 months.

But there has been talk about playing Sironen, who turns 18 on July 31, at five-eighth and putting Marshall at fullback.

If any coach knows when to test a teenager, it's Sheens. He unearthed Laurie Daley and Bradley Clyde at Canberra as 18-year-olds and picked Kangaroo centre Chris Lawrence as a schoolboy.

With Wade McKinnon and back-up Tim Moltzen both leaving the Tigers next season, moving Marshall to fullback and elevating Sironen may solve two problems.

Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys confirmed that Sironen was one of six outstanding prospects identified from the Toyota Cup side.

"Curtis may become a No. 6 in first grade and Benji moving back to fullback is kind of like a fireside conversation. There are lots of contingencies there," Humphreys said.

"But you're not going to move Benji without a lot of thought. I would suggest it's highly unlikely, but you never know. Sometimes kids just develop so quickly they demand selection and attention. There's no doubt if Curtis continues to work hard and stay disciplined, he'll have a long first-grade career.

"He's a John Sutton-type five-eighth in terms of his size, he's a good defender, has good hands, can make a break and kick goals.

"We think we've got at least six of our guys in the under-20s who will have long first-grade careers."

The son of Test back-rower Paul Sironen, Curtis made his debut in the Toyota Cup last August.

The Holy Cross Ryde student is signed with the Tigers until the end of 2013.

He has been selected for the NSW under-18s and will represent Combined Catholic Colleges at the Australian Schoolboys Carnival in St Mary's starting tomorrow.

But father Paul was cautious about the hype.

"He's taller than me, so he's a good size for a five-eighth and he's still got plenty of growing to do," Sironen said. "He's surrounded by a lot of good blokes at the Tigers and he'll make a good fist of it.

"He's going along OK, but he's still learning and it's only early days. He's giving himself every possible chance."

Funny isn't it headline makes it sound like its a definite

while the actual quote is "I would suggest its highly unlikely but you never know"

Dont think benji would catch a bomb with players like dave taylor running the ball down, just cant see that happening.

the daily telegraph are sensationalists…
nothing more. nothing less.

Doubt it will happen.

Personally I think Sironen will start in first grade at centre. Ayshford will move into the forwards. But that's at least 12-18 months away IMO. Doubt we will see Curtis in FG this year.

Anyone want to guess who the six players are that the club has identified as potential elite players?

Sironen
Groat
BMM
Miller
Begovich?
Simona?

Anyone else?

The Fijian winger whatever his name is. Noafaluma and tedesco if they stay around which apparently they won't.

Marika Koroibete for mine would be one of the 6.

I believe Tedesco is signed for at least 3 more years and the Tigers have a huge opinion on him, he won't be going anywhere.

The 6 for mine would be, all I think could have great NRL careers:

Groat
Miller
Sironen
Koroibete
Tedesco
BMM

I didn't include Woods as for mine he is already a NRL player even though he can still play for the 20's.

There are others that may make it as well; Begovich, Politoni, Noafaluma would be the next 3 in my opinion.

Even although Simona has played NRL, I think we have better in his position in the NYC team and I don't see him as a regular first graded at the Tigers. He is good enough I just don't think it will be with us.

if this was true why was miller chosen over siro this year?

A lot can happen in half a season with jnr development.
Words like ''plans'', ''contingencies'', ''may'' and ''cautious'' should give you the crux of the story

Something of a hose down story imo…....lots of crap in the press lately about us, this gets people talking about stuff other than our players having the shits, our CEO having a crack at other clubs and our coach swearing at jounos.

He says at least 6 so I think they probably have 8 to 10 in mind at the moment and it depends on developement over the next couple of years

Tedesco
Simona
Noafuluuma
Koribete
Sironen
Miller
BMM
Neil Begovich
Matt Groat
Pat Politini

These blokes would be the favourites - especially miller, Sironen and Tedesco

Begovich is better than Groat at this stage but he has a year on him. Begovich is the perfect old school front rower. I absolutely love the guy and can't wait to see him play first grade. He's Glenn Lazarus reincarnated. Groat is like a young Paul Harragon and they are both massive and still have loads of filling out to do. They are a scary prospect for the future.

They will stay, both juniors nurtured by Balmain and Wests and the club rates them highly. I've heard Tedesco is very happy at the club.

And Marika Koroibete is the winger you mean.

As for Benji to fullback…The high ball is the concern. Marshall would by dynamite chiming into the backline though but the club will need to put young Sirro somewhere, either at five eighth or in the centres, he's that good a talent.

I love the look of young Sirro, but I have a more than nagging feeling that he is going to end up too big for a 5/8\. Potentially centre/lock or even second row.

Hmmm ….Benji to fullback, sounds like nonsense to me.
I think Humpty may just be trying to get the fans to focus on something other than the cleanout.
