Wests Tigers v Eels
SFS
Friday 7.35pm

Last weekend these two teams played in a furnace as warm weather hit Sydney on Sunday – but it’s likely the heat this Friday night will be generated mostly from sizzling attack.

Two out-and-out entertainment machines come together at the SFS, both with a 1-1 record, but Parramatta come in off a win while the Wests Tigers come in off a loss.

Coincidentally, both teams have beaten Manly with impressive late comebacks.

The home-side Tigers started well against the Roosters last week but were then blown off the park. Only some late tries added respectability to the score line of 44-32.

The loss, after an opening round win over Manly, has the joint venture club currently running 11th on the NRL ladder.

They will be without the services of young halfback Robert Lui for a few weeks at least due to injury, which sees Tim Moltzen move from fullback to halfback and Mitch Brown come in as custodian.

Beau Ryan is back from suspension on the wing, pushing Daniel Fitzhenry to the bench, while Bryce Gibbs also returns at prop seeing Junior Moors revert back to the reserves list.

Todd Payten joins the team in the second row, pushing Mark Flanagan out of the starting side and Jason Schirnack out of the squad all together.

Parramatta stormed back from 20-0 against the Sea Eagles last weekend to win 24-20 under controversial circumstances, but the points have been registered and they now sit in ninth on the ladder.

They will be without the services of winger Luke Burt, who injured his knee, with the more than capable Krisnan Inu slotting in as his replacement.

Fuifui Moimoi has been named to start in his 100th game, which sees Justin Poore start from the bench.

Watch out Wests Tigers: Fuifui Moimoi is ready to rip and tear in his centenary match in the NRL – and this spells danger for the Wests Tigers’ defenders.

The burly prop with great explosive pace over short distances has earned himself a starting spot thanks to a mammoth effort against the Sea Eagles. He ran for 139 metres, had five tackle-breaks, a line-break and 13 tackles in 49 minutes of rip-snorting footy.

With talk his family might fly out for the occasion, Moimoi will be a man on a mission come Friday night.

Watch out Eels: If the Parramatta boys are planning complacency around the halves after young Robert Lui was ruled out, they should think again. Tim Moltzen has already proven himself a very capable playmaker and will ensure the Tigers’ attacking machine rolls on.

Moltzen leads the Wests Tigers with three line-breaks and three try assists and he has also notched up a line-break assist from fullback.

This week he gets a chance to be even closer to the action, so the Eels need to be aware of his ability to not just set up others, but to take the defence on in his own right.

Where it will be won: Riding the momentum. At this early stage of the season both the Wests Tigers and the Eels have shown they have some great football in their kitbags but they also have plenty of rust. In their opening two matches they have had patches of brilliance and patches of rubbish – and this is likely to continue in this match, so the trick is to ride the ups and take advantage so the downs can be tolerated.

Players will tell you that momentum shifts can be felt during a match and it’s hard to combat a team on a roll. When your side gets the flow going, you do not want to be the one who lets the opposition off the hook with a poor error.

In this contest, when the momentum heads to one side, the opposition needs to minimise the damage by trying to lift for one big scramble play or one big tackle that forces an error. We have all seen how players rush to the man who makes this type of play – they know how important they are.

Who wants it more? That’s what this game will come down to.

The History: Played 20; Wests Tigers 5, Eels 14, drawn 1\. The Eels have it all over the Wests Tigers, winning seven of the past eight matches between the clubs – and they also won the only match at the SFS.

Conclusion: With both teams just as likely to put in a great performance or an average one, at this stage of the year this game becomes a toss-of-the-coin job.

Both teams have match turners, like Jarryd Hayne and Lote Tuqiri, and both teams are proven try scorers.

The Eels do have the momentum from winning last week and their defence is usually a little stronger than the Wests Tigers’. Add to this their impressive record in the head-to-head battle and you can probably lean their way.

That's really surprising

Not really, two linebreaks against Manly, set up the Ayshford try as well as throwing the final pass for the Fulton try, and started to play decent against the Roosters once he was moved up into the halves. He's far more comfortable there than fullback. He's got his chance to make the most of it now.

Defensive attitude and application is the only thing that matters in this game. Pretty much everything else flows naturally for us

The way Moltzen plays reminds me of a young Craig Field! :ugeek:

Hope he goes that well. Let's hope he doesn't kick it out on the full as often as Field did though! (Although judging by our 'not finding touch' on the weekend, maybe he should kick it out of the full).

Good chance for Galloway to square off against Fui and reiterate his rep claims

Definately all about momentum atm. We are still having problems getting the repeat set when attacking the opposition line. Something we haven't sorted out since Prince left. If we dont score its essential that we have a good short kicking game for repeat sets.

Completion rate and repetative sets will be the deciding factor in this one.

Burt has been slotting the goal kicks very nicely, where as benji hasn't looked on at all with his goal kicking. Thats one thing in our favour with Burt out. Who's there next string kicker Inu or Hayne?

tigers will win if our completion rate is over 80%. nothing silly in our own half, just 5 tackles of the forwards, backs should only get it overthe 50m line or if marshall has his try vision turned on.

five day turn around after a thumping , dont like our chances. Just cant see us stopping the offloads and I think Parra will win well. In saying that anything can happen in the first six weeks of the comp. In a team that shows very little in defense Fultons injury is such a big blow to us. We all know we can score a try but really our dfense is a joke and has been for many a year.We are a upmarket version of some those teams Tommy R use to coach at Wests, no attitude in defense but loved having the ball in hand and as a result won bugger all games

VENUE & TIME: SFS, Friday March 26, 7.35pm (AEDT).
COVERAGE: Channel 9
HEAD TO HEADPlayed 20, Eels 14, Tigers 5, drawn 1
LAST TIME: Eels 26 – Tigers 18 at SFS, Round 24, 2009.
MATCH ODDS: Luxbet: Tigers $2.40, Eels $1.58

WALKING WOUNDED: Promising young Tigers half-back Robert Lui suffered an ankle injury last week and is looking at six weeks on the sideline. With Beau Ryan returning on the wing from suspension, full-back Tim Moltzen shifts to the No. 7 jersey, allowing former Shark Mitch Brown to slip into the custodian's role. Forwards Todd Payten and Bryce Gibbs return from injury in the starting line-up.
Luke Burt suffered a knee injury in his 200th first grade game for the Eels last week and has been replaced by Kiwi Test star Krisnan Inu. He joins forward Shane Shackleton (hamstring - season) on the Parra absentee list.

FORM: The Eels have been far from their best during the trials and in the first couple of rounds, but we were given a blunt reminder of what they are capable of in the final quarter of their match against Manly at the weekend. With Jarryd Hayne's brilliance showing the way, last year's grand finalists transformed a 0-20 scoreline into a thrilling four-point win over their arch-rivals. Forward passes aside, this was a memorable comeback victory for a side that is genuinely capable of anything in 2010.
The Tigers may well be a great attacking team to watch but defence remains their Achilles heel. They jumped out to a 12-0 lead against the Roosters then, inexplicably, let in four tries during a 12 minute period to remain on the back foot for the remainder of the game. It appears Tim Sheens and his assistant coach Royce Simmons are yet to work out a decent defensive formula for this club.

WHO'S HOT: When Jarryd Hayne does something special on the field you can expect to see his picture in the paper and face on the television for the next week or so. For those wondering what all the fuss is about, just watch the final 20 minutes of the Eels' win over the Sea Eagles last Sunday. You won't be disappointed.
Lote Tuqiri's performances over the first two rounds for the Tigers cannot be faulted. The guy spent seven long years catching a cold out on the wing in union, but it appears he hasn't forgotten how to play the more entertaining form of rugby which can only be a good thing for Tigers and rugby league fans in general. He looked as slick as he ever did during that 70m dash for a try against the Roosters on Sunday.

WE THINK: The Tigers are great to watch, but a couple of things they don't do well should hurt them in this match. For starters, they struggle in defence - not a great deficiency to have at the best of times. Another thing is their inability to beat the Eels. Even during their premiership-winning 2005 season, Tim Sheens' men couldn't get anywhere near Parramatta. The merged club has lost nine of its past 10 against the Eels and with Hayne and Timana Tahu running rampant again, expect the more of the same on Friday night. Eels by 12.

Anyone seen Daley's view yet…I cant find it.....I need a laugh....

Laurie Daley's NRL preview

Fox Sports commentator Laurie Daley offers his thoughts and predictions for round three of the NRL this weekend.

Friday, March 26
Wests Tigers v Parramatta Eels, Sydney Football Stadium, 7.35pm (EDT)

This is a difficult one to predict given that both teams played in extremely hot conditions on the weekend. It could come down to which team has recovered the best. The Tigers defensively, when pressure is applied, certainly concede plenty of points and that’s been their big problem over the past four years. We all know what they are capable of doing with the football when they’ve got Benji Marshall and Robbie Farrah in the team, but their attitude to defence needs to change. If it does, then they are a chance of winning the competition, let alone this game. It’s a big game for them to bounce back. The Eels, on the other hand, haven’t been consistent in their performance over the first two weeks – and even last week, particularly in the first 40 minutes, they were off the pace. In the second half, they relied on Jarryd Hayne to spark them. You don’t want to be relying on him to do that every week! I think the Tigers can win this as I think they will be highly motivated, but they will need to limit Hayne’s impact.

Just watched Jason Taylor talking about the game and he reckons our defense out wide is too brittle to withstand the Eels attack - Have to agree - one win out of three.
Wait until Round 14 to start worrying

Last clash: Eels 26 bt Tigers 18 at Sydney Football Stadium (Rd 24, 2009)
TAB SportsBet: Tigers $2.40, Eels $1.55
FootyTab: Tigers +3.5.

The Eels were looking down the barrel at an 0-2 start to the season until superstar Jarryd Hayne went into overdrive aginst the Sea Eagles last weekend. He made three tries - although one of them should have been pulled up for a blatant forward pass - and the Eels won 24-20 after trailing 20-0\. It was spectacular, but it didn't hide the fact the Eels have issues they need to address regarding their form generally, if they are to start winning on a regular basis. As good as he is, they can't expect Hayne to rescue them every time they get into trouble. But coach Daniel Anderson is well aware of that, and he would have drilled in them the areas in which they need to improve going into this game. The Eels have lost goalkicking winger Luke Burt to a knee injury. He is replaced by another goalkicker, Krisnan Inu.

The Tigers are another team who have issues they need to address. They were in similar trouble against the Sea Eagles in the first round, before their own magicians - Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah - orchestrated a stunning comeback in time for them to win. But the Roosters exposed their defensive frailties last weekend, running in eight tries in a 44-32 win. The Tigers aren't playing for 80 minutes, and they're not defending very well on their own line. In the first two rounds they conceded the most points of any team - 66 - and if they are loose again Hayne will carve them up. The Tigers have multiple injury problems, with halfback Robert Lui and second-rower Liam Fulton joining long-term injured winger Taniela Tuiaki on the unavailable list. This could go either way, but the Eels look a bit more settled in their lineup.

Glenn Jackson writes: Both Wests Tigers and Parramatta are expected to be 1-17 for their contest at the SFS.
