Wests Tigers v Knights - Nines - game III

I'll give you some positives

1/ Half the side the top side is still in Australia (Keefy ,Brooks ,Rowdy ,Simona ,Sue ,Sirro ,Nofoaluma)

2/ Fortunately it wasn't an NRL game and wasn't worth much in terms of the season

3/ Some heads might role this time , this could be a good thing

4/ Show this video as a reminder to everyone a couple of days before Round 1

I'm personally glad we got a performance like this out of our system

+ 3 weeks to work on defence!

jesus guys! chill out, you were singing their praises a week ago and even after YESTERDAYs game. and now we'll be hearing calls to sack potter and the whole team, especially that Farah guy…..

this forum always overreacts to absolutely anything, good or bad. lets just wait it out till at least round 2 or 3, if you want we can start calling for people's heads then.

No one is calling for anybody to be sacked. But given that many of the errors - treble defensive reads, selfish Farah plays - were the reasons we struggled last year, there is a reason to be concerned. Of course, we all recognise that is one 9s and there is a long way to go but we can only comment on the football we see.

Has blake Austin made a tackle this whole tournament?

Saw him make a number of try savers

Yeh me too KS. Some his tackles were very good on big men. FF you do realise he is the guy with the 7 on his back don't you. Hasn't done a great deal wrong in defence bearing in mind its nine a side football.

If you love arm grabbing, Austin's your man.
I know it's only nines, but I've seen enough to say, we won't need this type of player.

The wasn't Farah's fault. Just because Benji is gone lets not focus on the next biggest player to blame. We lost that because of horrible defence.

Someone above said Austin made some try savers…? I saw him mis at least 8 tackles himself throwing out the arm. That is the first time I have seen him play. Very very worried about his defence.

Let's just recap. A state cup level second rower as a centre.
No half back in the squad
No game plan

All things that won't carry forward into our real season.

The only issue that counts is Terrible defence.

Lots of work to do before the season starts. Best to get the issues out early. I for one am very glad for the guys getting a hit out.

Mate you do realise that in 9s there is extra space meaning its very hard for a defender to make body tackles don't you?

Mate I do. But it's not good reading when you have more missed tackles than tackles made.

Regardless of the format the amount of simple one on one misses and poor defensive reads still seems to be an issue.
I was a little disappointed with Austin. I thought it would of been a great opportunity for him to play assertively and really direct the side around the park.

And it only went for 18 minutes , imagine 80 minutes of that crap 😱pen_mouth:

The thing I have gotten out of the Nines tournament is that they have shown enough to separate the men from the boys - we can see who'll be starting in State cup, and who really has put their hand up for first grade.

Tedesco, Patterson, Blair (well, 2 out of 3 games he was good), Richards, Tapau, have all shown themselves to be deserving of First grade spots.

Gavet, Austin, Koro, Thompson have all been shown up in defence - plenty of Arm grabs - most one-on-one tackles they were swatted away. Gavet to his credit was extremely strong in his runs though.

Interesting stuff - I think Potters selection headaches should be slowly disappearing - and the trial vs Cronulla next week should make the picture clearer still.

I don't really count the 2nd half here as the Tigers were refereed out of the game in the first half, and it's hard enough playing catch up when you have 40 minutes to work with, let alone 9 minutes.

Hope the Warriors win it all though. They play great footy and are crowd pleasers.

Having said that, I also put a lobster on them….

Selfish thy name is Farah. How did one of the smartest players in the game from 2005 to 2008 become one of the dumbest?

Why dont u have whinge about Robbie ST???

Turn the record over for Jebus' sake…we get it.

Look loosing isn't the issue for me , what bothers me is the fact there was no effort , heart or even the slight bit of interest out there.
I think it might be an attitude thing at our club and it all starts with the coach .
By round 10 I fear Potter might be unemployed and Payten to step in.

I am not so worried about missed tackles in 9s. I am more worried about our defensive structure and reads. We were horribly exposed every time the Knights shifted the ball as our defensive line always over commits and bunches. Our complete inability to deploy a sliding defence (which I would have thought was the obvious tactic in Nines) has me very worried.

It's not about who played mate, it's about attitude, our attitude in defense was very, very concerning… Just arm grabbing, nothing else.

Good defensively coached sides don't just switch it off because it's a pre-season match, they show good traits in any match, attacking plays may lapse but good attitude in defense is one of those things that sticks, no matter the game, and our defensive attitude was very, very concerning leading up to the start of the season.

It's by no means the end of the world, I'm actually kind of glad we are now out of this thing as the injuries across the 9's have been horrible, and knowing our luck we'd end up with more, but anybody who writes that defensive effort off with no concern is going to be in for a very rude shock this year I feel, because attitude says an awful lot about the general state of a side.

**Performances**, we were abysmal defensively in every match. The Titans, Sharks & Knights all looked like scoring on every tackle they had.

Mate I will stop whinging about Robbie when you stop whinging about Blair i.e. never.

Thankfully that mess is over and the boys can get back on the plane and get stuck into some defensive training. Completely out-enthused and outplayed in that match.
