LIVE GAME Wests Tigers v Melbourne Storm..

Live Game Discussion
At the start of the week, I said that I'd settle for a 12 or under point loss. Considering the events that transpired in that game, Im not happy with the result. This will be one of those "what if" games for us.

Positives:
*Our pack was the big positive to come out of tonight. In the first 40, I thought we shaded the Storm in the forward battle. As the game wore on, they were not as effective....but I felt they did enough to win the game if other parts of our team fell into place. I feel there is a lot of improvement in them too.
*We competed very well for about 60 minutes against one of the two mentally toughest teams in the comp. Our defence (apart from goal line def) was very good for 60 minutes....much better than last year. We win that game against most teams in the comp.
*Our two wingers were great. Maumalo looks a great kick-to bomb target while Nofo played with good pep and enthusiasm tonight.

Negatives:
*Goal line defence. Holy f**k, it was bad! It was as bad as any point last year. No resilience and no real idea from the side on how to defend from that position. It looked frail every set in our 20m line. If that does not improve from tonight, we WILL get the spoon.

*Our spine: Considering the fairly decent platform that the pack gave them, I thought the spine were very disappointing. While Roberts / Gildart are not world beaters at the moment, I feel they are good enough to take advantage of good play if their halves do a job.
Laurie: Probably the quietest game he has had for us. Threw a gem of a pass for the Nofo try....but pretty much f**k all else. Never trailed around his forwards, didn't chime in attack for the majority of the match. Im a tad weary about this bloke and where things are going regarding him and the Tigers. One to watch.
Hastings: Very early days but geez he looks SLOW! Im at a wait and see position in regards to the bloke. Very hard (but not impossible) for a half to succeed in today's footy without some sort of pace.
Brooks: Rules are made for this bloke....just not a really bright or particularly skilled half. Average.
Simpkin: His service is not the quickest or slickest.

^Happy to give the spine 3 or 4 weeks at least to gel. Hastings is brand new, Simpkin only 2 or 3 games ahead of JH. Laurie's support play was a bit sub-par last year, coming off a stuffed leg he was always going to take a bit of settling in this year: hope he works on his support play.
Was massively surprised when Lucy took a hit up not many blokes were trailing him in support. That is a must.

We had enough ball in the first half to win the game comfortably but our spine was not up to it.

Hasting is a good organise, but is also slow and predictable, Brooks..it’s all been said a million times, Laurie did not seem to back up around the middle and Simkins is just a kid who has been thrown in the deep end.

Personally I think it’s going to be a very long season, once the grind hits in and the enthusiasm wanes it could get ugly…but you never know, they were a mile better than their last comp game against the Dogs

My only question out of that game, or how about the fact that Maumalo’s 12-pt turnaround was automatically given no try, when old mate pea-heart was in front of the play? He looked for all money to have gotten it down… I’ll absolutely accept that in the end, with camera angles, he didn’t grass it. But, where’s our benefit of the doubt or 50/50 calls that other shitter teams get? When is it our turn?
The touchie had a good view of that and was the one who told the ref he didn’t get it down.

Aside From your thoughts on Brooks, I agree with your post. I’m not sure what more Brooks could have done in that game.
Hastings is as slow as. He may have won man of steel in the uk, but at the moment he is more like the man of lead.
Gildart’s defence is ordinary as was the whole team in our own 20.
Daine is a good player but his support play more so his positioning needs work.
We must be the slowest team in the NRL And our defence needs a lot of work.
long season ahead but not doom and gloom.

Just watching these Fox knobbers dissect the game. No mention of 3 metre forward pass for Coates try. Haven't felt less interested in this sport TBH, corruption sees who makes grade and who doesn't.
Bellamy the maggot had the hide to whinge about the penalty count: where are the journo's with a set of nuts to ask questions? 3metre forward pass for try?
Papenheyzen PTB that went on 45° angle and play on?
NAS PTB that the commentators described as 'worst PTB of the century' that was let go?
We got pinged in 1st half on the attack for not playing the ball with the foot....less than 2 mins later they do it and play on.
Corrupt shit year after year, no wonder the interest is massively haemorrhaging. It's ####### garbage.
Hope Bellamy the mange-ridden flog and his team of vermin get their Just desserts ASAP.
We got some against and some for. The Noffa knock on late in the game that was let go an example.

Insightful and respectful.
Noted.

I also hope last night's pairing can improve and develope over time.

Its round 1 so I'm not going to say we're doomed already but a lot of question marks over the team, from last night's game.

Arguably, two of our best last night- mentioned a lot in the 3, 2, 1 thread (Kelma and Luciano) won't be here next year.

Boys put in the effort tonight.

Some shonky calls. You're the have's or the have not's. Some really shit calls. 3metre forward pass for Coates try, I can get to replay that on my shitty Foxtel box- why can't the clowns running the game organise to see this? It's piss poor.
Stop blaming the referees, they weren't the reason for the continued poor goal line defence. Good teams defend referees mistakes. We don't and haven't over the last three and now start of the fourth year.

How can we be a really poor team yet constantly blame the refs? Is it the refs that have kept us out of the 8 for a decade?

Pride in the jersey.
Man that would go a long way.
Watched the highlights and we seem to be still backpedalling on our own goal line. Hasn't changed.
If we get pumped by knights, Marge has to be close.

Basically agree, though when they went up as a unit following their half on the right, there was already an overlap and the fullback still way across field. We lucked in on that occasion when Olam with all the time in the world fluffed it.

We need to straighten our attack more on left hand side. Ken running out of room. Hasting might be slow but he attracts two defenders and very good passing game and seems to have all the time in the world. Look for vast improvement in coming weeks as players get use to his style.

They certainly weren't responsible for that, though they set the standard early on when Meaney wasn't penalised for offside when he clearly was and got to Hastings? quicker than Usain Bolt could have.

There was one set as they were starting to dominate and it didn't surprise as to why, when continually allowed to lay on the top of those coming out of our end. On one of those tackles I reckon you could go close to counting five seconds and it wasn't even a dominant one.

Might have been the set when Laurie kicked on the last. On that kick, when he called for the ball on the last and with plenty of space behind the defence I was expecting Daine to either chip or take on the line, but instead kicked across field to the opposite winger.

Brooks got caught with th ball a lot it seemed last night.... He's so predictable it's bordering on tedious, that sidestep of his that fools no one does my head in
Everything he does is premeditated. You can guarantee every time he steps back inside he runs into a man never an open space. Does my head in

Some good and bad in this game. Forwards were good,Hastings is too slow and we cannot progress far in the modern game without speedy and nimble halves. Few attacking players capable of making a break. Offa, Lucy, and Tuilagi were great , Brooks worked his arse off, but the defense knows he's the main threat and crowd him all night. Would prefer Madden at 5/8 or find someone with speed and skill for this position, it's still our biggest problem.
