Wests Tigers Head Coach Michael Maguire says combinations will be the key thing he's watching for in Sunday's trial match against the New Zealand Warriors in Rotorua as the focus continues to narrow for the 2020 season ahead.

Maguire has named a squad of 23 players for the cross-Tasman trial match for the second year in a row, with all the regular big names including Benji Marshall, Luke Brooks and Moses Mbye included for the visitors.

Having watched a number of the club's new faces trial strongly against the Penrith Panthers last Saturday, Maguire said seeing how the combinations between players develop would be the key thing for him this week and a deciding factor in who will force their way in to the Round 1 side.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing those combinations," Maguire said.

"We've done a lot of work in the pre-season and I've seen the boys grow throughout that time but it's now about getting out on the park and delivering a strong performance before we start the season.

"I think the combinations will be the big thing for us — whether it's the right edge, left edge or through the middle — they're all growing. It's going to be down to us to how they go in a game situation."

Having watched new recruits Zane Musgrove, Adam Doueihi, Billy Walters and Luciano Leilua all have their first game for the club last week, Maguire said he was excited to see the new places take the next step forward now in their second game.

"Trials is a little bit about blowing off the cobwebs," he said, "but it's also too about seeing how they're going to perform in the team and the unit and the way that we're playing.

"We've got big BJ [Leilua] coming in this week... and all our big players are playing so I'm really looking forward to watching those combinations grow throughout the game.

"We've been doing a lot of work for quite a couple of months on that but it's now about what they do on the field against the opposition."

Wests Tigers will kickoff against the New Zealand Warriors at 12:00pm AEDT on Sunday (2:00pm local time) in their final hit-out before the 2020 season officially gets underway for Maguire's side on March 15 against St. George-Illawarra.

So combinations are important now ...but they weren't important last week .....

No they weren’t. Last week was about giving the newbies a taste first grade.

So organize a trial against a Group side for the CC squad ....

Penrith treated the trial differently funnily enough ....many other clubs are treating both trials importantly

If we aren't ready to rock come Rd 1 ...we've got it wrong .....and I'm guessing many on here will blame everyone bar who they should point the finger at

Damn it..and I got in first and everything..

My replies are based on IQ level and cohesive replies ...wait your turn I will get to you eventually

I know you try and give a reasonable opinion with the knowledge you have about Rugby League Happy, but don't you think Madge would have been right onto working out who plays where and with who,he has new recruits but they are NRL level and only need some intense training runs with Madge coaching them to their ability ...He knows his top 17 and has picked his squad to be a competitive unit...this weeks trial is just about how their COMBINATIONS will go under NRL pressure and see how far they have come before the season starts...Madge knows more than I or anyone else does at this stage ...we can only speculate and hope his selections and coaching sees our team become a finals contender...cheers mate..

Whats the saying? Premierships are not won in Round 1?

I see no point in analysing the coaches decision making in the trials, based on almost zero knowledge of the pre-season, injuries, his thoughts and concerns, the likely strategy Rd 1. Who cares if he names Corey or Doueihi or a brown dog at fullback in a trial. And, if we don't play great in Round 1, that doesn't necessarily mean anything. In Rd 1 2018 we beat Roosters and they won the comp. In Rd 1 2019 we belted Manly and they made the semis.

It's about the long-game all season, which hasn't started yet.

What's the chances of the team running out similar to the back end of last year - so the named 9 starts off the bench, an extra forward starts, and Benji covers dummy half for the first 20 or so?

This means Walters only has to play 60mins, and means we're not short a forward. Just need one (or more) of the forwards to act as a link man to Brooks in the first 20.

Matterson was the one who filled that role, the only other one who has the ball skills for it is Luciano Leilua but you don’t want to dampen his running game which is his biggest weapon

ET and Eisenhuth aren’t bad at it when they play lock but Not sure either of them are in the top 17 all depends on how the bench and forward rotation works.

Also, to reply to myself, we are an amazing 9 wins 1 loss in the first 2 rounds of the last 5 seasons. So if we look nothing like headless chickens in Round 1, it still doesn't mean anything. We've only ever lost the opening 2 matches of a season once, in 2007, and we've only lost in Round 1 6 times in all our 20 seasons as a merged club.

I am questioning why he's not starting with AD. He, Benji and Brooks have had zero game time together. Bizarre decision.

Maybe he wants AD to earn his spot rather than serve it up to him on a serving dish... Thommo is the incumbent to and showing him that respect after his performances the last couple of years is justified imo

This is what I think as well. Even a big signing for us has to work his way into the team.

Is Leiluiiii's plural when you have 2 Leilua's..I like it..although Burghi it is not..

I think the main difference being that Leilua he has a big body to go with his ball playing skills which draws defenders and creates opportunities. ET has good hands, but doesn't draw defenders. I think what we're missing rather than a ballplaying forward is a forward with a good offload. Second phase play is something that has been missing from this side for a while now. I'm looking forward to seeing both Leilua's and possibly Musgrove causing some problems with offloads. Walters looks to have a bit of toe about him and with Doueihei sniffing around the ruck hopefully we'll be a bit more threatening with the ball in jand from all over the park.

Sounds like Madge will push Walters to see if he can handle 80mins. https://amp.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/reynolds-facing-on-field-battle-to-make-round-one-tigers-team-20200227-p5454n.html?__twitter_impression=true

Would be a massive boost for us if Walters could play 80. We would be a stronger side with four forwards on the bench compared to having a utility there I think

4 weeks ago we didn't have Leilua , Douehi

You reckon they have had the chance to fully build combinations like sides that may have played 2-3 seasons together ..or even since November

AD fullback, nofo and Jennings wings.
Clark, Musgrove & Seyfarth on the bench, with MCK to cover, and can play centre if Mbye needs to go into DH for Walters.

Don't think Seyfarth will get a spot, but think you are right with the back three.
