wests went down today against newtown at campbelltown stadium 44 to 30

Wests actually played some ok footy in parts and were really competitive in the first half but as has been their habit they let themslves down in the 2nd half. 3 tries in the opening 10 mins of the 2nd half killed any chance Wests had. David Fifita played ok and is starting to play some more mins although could be out for a week or 2 after being put on report for a lifting tackle. The number 5 whose name I forget played quite well picking up a couple of tries as well as putting on a crunching tackle although he was caught out a couple of times in defence. Josh Davis was strong as usual and I thought David Harris played quite well at lock (although he really needs to work on his fitness if he is ever to play first grade….too much walking).
For Newtown a couple of former Tigers did most of the damage in Blake Lazarus and Willie Mataka. Mataka was very strong out wide and caused the Maggies right side defence all sorts of problems. Lazarus would have had to be man of the match. He led them around well, set up a number of their tries and kept them on the back foot with his kicking.
I don't think Wests are that far from being a good side. They just need to stop switching off in games and work on their seemingly shoddy fitness levels.
