What a year for Smith

* Captained his club side to a premiership only 2 years after the team was dismantled due to salary cap rorting.
* Captained Queensland to an unprecedented 7th straight State of Origin series victory
* Captained Australia to 2 wins over New Zealand
* Was named Dally M hooker of the year for the 5th time
* Was named RLIF hooker of the year for the 4th time
* Was named Melbourne Storm player of the year for the 5th time
* Was named Rugby League World Golden Boot award recipienct for the 2nd time.

This bloke is an incredible Rugby League player and we are lucky that he still has a good 5 years left in him. It is also good for the Wests Tigers and Robbie Farah personaly that even though Smith will be an immortal one day, he is not too far behind him. Really looking forward to the battle between these two next year.
 
I thought Steve Walters was the best hooker I had ever seen since watching rugby league since 1977.

Cameron Smith is in a class of his own and the best hooker I have ever seen.

Will be an immortal one day along with Billy Slater.

Has there ever been a better spine than Slater, Cronk and Smith?
 
Brisbane had a good spine in the late 90's of Lockyer; Walters; Langer & Walters and I think the Canberra combination of Mullens; Daley; Stuart & Walters was also pretty good…

Has Melbourne ever had the complete Spine?

Both Smith and Walters are way overrated(IMO)
Both very good players but I often wonder how they would have gone playing in a team where they weren't surrounded by superstars.
I know you are only commenting from 1977 everett but guys like Noel Kelly , Ian Walsh , Fred Jones , Elwyn Walters and George Piggins from the 60's would have chewed them up and spat them out.
I know I am biased but Benny Elias was a far superior player than Walters .

Why are we lucky???? I can't really say he adds much excitement or enhances RL as a spectacle.
 
Cameron Smith is the greatest player of his era and you can 't ask for any more than that (2012 onwards)

The only bloke I have seen in his stratosphere as a hooker since the mid seventies was Steve Walters

These blokes would of been good in any previous era
 
Every side Smith plays in wins, he is the superstar of both the Melbourne team and the Queensland team. Far and away the best player in the game today, he probably touches the ball 100 times a game and will have maybe 1 bad touch a game. For a while I wondered how he'd do in a team surrounded by average players, but I realise now a lot of them look a lot better than they actually are because of him.

Well said mate. This is the truth. He has mastered the position and is the greatest hooker I have ever seen. I would back him against hookers from any generation as well.

Take out 2 of his superstar team mates and you won't come across a move average side then the Storm. So you could say he is already surrounded by average players

His attack would shine more thats no doubt, however would every part of his game improve? He played with them on Sat and even though he did some good stuff, he still threw a few passes that hit the turf.

I believe that Slater and Cronk are better players because of Smith - not the other way around.
 
As long that Farah and Smith are the best hookers and we have the other best hooker Robbie Farah hopefully we re sign after we cofirm our coach.

Sums it up. He completely controls the game at every level he plays and ensures the pace etc. of the game suits his team.
edit - Smith has also continually improved his ability to dominate a game. A few years ago he and Robbie were pretty close to on par but Smith just kept improving in his control of the game whereas Robbie didn;t. (one of the things I blame sheens for entirely)

On the 'best ever spine' question, as a flash in the pan combination our last half of 2005 was right up there. Hodgo, Benji, Prince and Farah carved sides apart which was a perfect fit for how the game was being reffed at the time. Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, our spine hasn;t ever been anywhere that good or that suited to the game since but geeze it was magic for the last half of that season.

It was more going back to when Melbourne were at their peak in 2007 with an all star backline and several superstar forwards.

True, but it ain't all about lying all over the ruck, super-slow play the balls, grappling, crusher tackles and leg twisting etc that Smith seems to be the master at.
As I said, as a spectacle, he don't add much to the game IMO

Farah would do just as good a job as Smith if he had the opportunity to play with Slatter and Cronk on a regular basis instead he has had to endure Moltzen and whoever was paling half each week. For me, the only tick Smith has over Farah is his goal kicking, Farah was just as good if not better than Smith in the SOO series.
