What about Tuiaki?

I think it's great Simon Dwyer has finally been looked after financially after what has happened, but I can't help but spare a thought for Tuiaki.

Does anyone know whether the club has done or will do anything to help Tuiaki financially given the recent focus on these career ending injuries?

It opens up a can of worms really when you look at career ending injuries. McKinnon and Dwyer look to have suffered permanent disabilities. Is Tuiaki's injury a major disability or does it just prevent him from playing footy?

It affects his ability to find work as he is involved in manual labour.

So he is unable to retrain, learn new skills?

I dont think so.

The club did get him a franchise with Allied Pickford I believe at the time

I don't think it worked out , I didn't hear anything more about it

It inhibits him staying on his feet for long periods does it?
Its a tough one. If the club has to compensate every injured player it would prove fairly costly. What if say, Lulia, suffered a career ending injury in his first game for us, would we need to look after him aswell?
Was Tuiaki's contract paid out?

Talking fundraising rather than the club paying it all.

Ink said something about re-skilling etc. but the reality is, Tuiaki would have earned significantly more as an NRL player than any job he could become qualified for. Plus, his career was taken from him overnight without warning.

I'm not saying anyone owes him anything, but going forward, the NRL has insurance in place for these things. That doesn't help Dwyer or Tuiaki though and I think as a club and as supporters, we should make sure our own are looked after if something goes wrong.

As sad as it was with Tuiaki, no the club doesn't have the same obligation imo. Theres no comparison between Dwyer suffering nerve damage in his vertebrae to Tuiaki breaking his ankle. Players that have had their careers ended over the yrs like Tuiaki are a dime a dozen.

I'm disgusted with the NRL with their involvement in supporting Simon Dwyer. For starters it has been 5 years to long. The sad thing in all of this is if it hadn't been for the horrific injury that Alex McKinnon suffered, I can say with certainty Simon will have been left to suffer without assistance. Fortunately for Simon he is now going to get some financial assistance to help him, but it will no way cover him for life. Shame on the NRL, it has failed again in its proper support. They should have tipped in a minimum $200k with a further dollar for dollar match to all money's raised. They are a joke, they had their chance of saying sorry with a big donation but they didn't. Absolute disgrace.

Have to disagree with you on this one. Anyone who pulls on our jersey deserves to be treated equally. The issue is being addressed we think by the NRL commission so lets hope in the future players are compensated in some way.
Rugby League was formed for this very reason!

I don't think that breaking an ankle and having a permanent problem would attract an enormous payout in any form of work. On the other hand, an injury such as Dwyers, well that's a different kettle of fish.
