I’m not blaming him , but I think Cleary was into something about recruiting dudes who didn’t clock off, but maybe weren’t the most skill full. Maybe this where the we are let down . This sea that you recruit the talent and teach them the mental toughness .
It’s not just fitness that makes you chase someone down .
When I was a kid , I was pretty unfit , but if there was a linebreak down the other edge I would make the effort to push across and just be there , knowing most of the time I had no chance of stopping anything . Every now and then I’d save a try , or bundle someone into touch because just being there caused indecision.
Or putting pressure on a kicker , no matter how stuffed I was , tackle 6 I would sprint at that kicker and try and affect the game. I charged down heaps of kicks , or caused them to boot it into touch.
Even if I was having a real bad game , you just try to do something positive , make a play for your team . This is what I think the top teams do . Obviously these guys are way more talented that I ever was , but the point remains . Work when you think , working is a waste of time . Effort plays as people are saying.
