One of the saddest things I've seen was a WW2 remembrance wall somewhere in Germany (I cant recall the town). On it, were several groups of surnames, clearly related brothers, fathers, uncles, all from the same villages. Entire villages emptied by a lunatic regime.

It is based on fact,an unofficial truce did actually break out in a few locations along the front and there was a soccer match between british/german teams.The high command in all armies were absolutely horrified and moved all units to other parts of the front so the killing could start again.Never underestimate the stupidity of politicians and the military.

I agree with your sentiment but disagree that these sorts of decisions are stupidity driven.
It is greed and power….and it always has been.
