Whatever happened to the Wests in the Wests Tiger

There is some good posts and some rubbish.
My view it makes economic and football sense to have 1 reserve grade side. IMO that side should be called west tigers and should play in alternating strips and at alternate grounds.
I'm a tigers man originally, and have mates who are originally wests fans, we never even think about supporting different clubs, I've said before I call them tigers, they call them wests, I compare woods to blocker they compare him to Boyd (not really but you know what I mean)
We are all happy. Leichhardt is sometimes called the spiritual home, but we still have the fibros v silvertails when we play manly, we shouldn't get insulted when the other sides history is embraced it is not a sleight on the others past…

Agree Goose. And I'm in a similar position being good mates and attending a lot of games with an old magpie. He doesn't get shirty if someone says Tigers, I don't care when they get called Wests. That's what the club is called and in this country their is a tendency to use the emblem/logo of a sporting teams. It's not favouritism or an insult to the location part of team names. Got a text from him on the weekend cause he was excited Balmain won SG Ball just like I'd be pumped if Wests had a crack junior team because the ultimate winner is Wests Tigers.

I agree with you and respect the history of both Wests and Balmain - they are Wests Tigers.

However, a couple of experiences annoy me, and I will be honest, I hate posting these examples:

- Attending Leichhardt Oval and on occasions at the SFS, I may mention "Wests" without "Tigers". Many fans around me look at me like I am an away fan. It is strange because at Campbelltown, I have never had that experience. "Wests" or "Tigers" are easily interchangeable.

- Following from above, at Leichhardt you generally then hear, "It's really Balmain…."

- "It's really Balmain...." is also said by a lot of neutral rugby league fans

I find this annoying because I understand the structure of the JV quite well and know it to be 50/50\. It is obvious to me that many fans do not understand the structure. It is frustrating to then, on occasions, have to explain to fans how the JV works, how Balmain and Wests contribute and then finally, explaining the financial status of the leagues clubs that back Wests and Balmain. In saying the above, I find great pleasure in explaining the structure of the JV to fans who somehow think the JV was a takeover.

Regardless, I think this is the problem with "what happened to the "Wests" in Wests Tigers." I don't believe the rugby league public understands the structure of the JV and the role Wests plays within (ie: 50% shared with Balmain). I don't know who is responsible for this perception. It may be marketing or in my opinion, it is most likely to be a lack of initiative by Western Suburbs to embrace their role in the JV. Balmain certainly do a better job in that department by being aligned at the board level, whereas the Wests Group just seem to argue within themselves.

That's my two cents and I reckon all of this won't matter in about 20 odd years. Wests and Balmain will be long forgotten and it will only be Wests Tigers fans.

I'm outraged. Should be #nrltitanstigers, like the AFL. How DARE the NRL show that kind of bias. It's like Balmain never existed. The nerve….
 
I honestly think there is no Malice in Wests Tigers being labelled the Tigers… Most teams have 2 names, Some are more palatable to the ear (Or tounge than others...)
For example:
Parramatta Eels are More often referered to as Parramatta.
Geelong Cats however, are more often referred to as Geelong
Then there are teams that are 50/50 Brisbane Broncos, Hawthorn Hawks spring to mind
The Titans are called the Titans more than Gold Coast... Same with the Cowboys!!
I barely ever hear anyone refer Essendon as such... Always the bombers.
But Fremantle is the opposite... Or Freo...
It's not just our sport, Or our team... It's in every sport!!
Some teams one name strikes more with peoples personalities than others.
I can't imagine (In the old days) There would have been a "C'MON Western Suburbs" Chant going around the ground??
I would think it would have been MAG-PIES, MAG-PIES!!, Same with the TIG-ERS or ROO-STERS Chants that go up now...
To assume or accuse it of being anything else... Is stupidity!! It's the way it is, It's the way it always has been.... It's the way it always will be....
 
ps: And I believe the Scorecard on all our televised games Labels us as WST!!
Or it did the last time I cared to notice…
This point is overlooked time and time again...
We are labelled WEST for the whole 100 odd minutes of game time!!
What more do you need?

This is my biggest issue. I remember being at a game in about 03 and someone shouted out 'Wests', and someone else said 'they're not Wests, they're the Wests Tigers' :crazy
There still are people from both sides of the fence who flat out refuse to acknowledge the other side, which is disappointing. Both names should be embraced. I don't see why its so difficult for ex-Balmain fans to adopt the Wests name, and for ex-Wests fans to adopt the 'Tigers' name. I know i have
 
Only time I ever got annoyed with people chanting Wests was with one person who I have a extreme dislike for anyway doing it behind me in between games one day while I was trying to have a conversation.

So more likely my problems were with the elasticated waist band jeans wearing mongoloid rather then the term itself
 
We are the ONLY nrl club that argues about nsw cup feeder sides
, jersey designs, team naming in the media, a tiny magpie on a sleeve, colour combinations and merchandising, suburban home ground allocations, one brand ideology (nrl club must be same in nsw cup)

These debates go on and on because the majority of us (over 25yo) are aligned to our old club in some way.. This can vary from fan to fan.. To old balmain fans sitting in their philips jersey enjoying the hill at leichhardt on a sunday arvo or magpie diehards wanting to see the magpies stay alive in nsw cup with teir kids shaking the hand of the morris the magpie.

We have these debates because we are passionate and its in our blood. Its not centered around hatred for one another.

The two main issues that fire people up:

- general recognition of the 'wests' brand in WT
- nsw cup situation ( some Don't care about it, but in the same breath don't want magpies identity to survive in it and fund its presence separately to WT rather than a burden on WT)

With this comes the general (internal and external) perception of the BRET tigers brand and WT tigers brand becoming harder to distinguish.

Frustrations, emotions, logic and passion all come into it.

Balmain heart, magpies blood. This is what makes WESTS TIGERS

A new team called Wests Tigers emerged. That is now my team in the top grade.

X2 get over it guys and support the WESTS TIGERS last time I checked both teams are recognized we are now over ten years down the track and people are still whining " what about me"….. we play 4 games at leichardt and four games at campbelltown what more do you whingers want!!!!

Majority of teams are called by their nickname so except it.

Manly is one team that hardly gets called by their nickname the rest do.

nrl.com use the word wests all the time…but really counting the amount of times on tv....lol

there are many ways we can view it but the way I see it is this
We are the wests magpies and balmain tigers playing together to achieve success as the wests tigers, we have too much pride and history to ignore and are strongest if we embrace each sides strengths and combine them.

Similar but different to how many players from various clubs combine to form the blues for the greater cause of beating the maroons.

Some WT fans will EXCEPT that theory and others may ACCEPT it.. I accept WT 100%! Except that i am still passionate about my old club (that still legally and technically exists) and want to see the legacy of wests live on through WT just like the tigers legacy lives on also.

We are Wests Tigers gee it's been 12 years get over it.There are still people who can't except it . My 9 year old nephew got told off by a supporter for yelling out Go Wests he was told that it's the Tigers not Wests.I was quick to point out that at age 9 he wasn't even familiar with the merge and associated polotics.

It does raise an interesting aside though GnR.

Two syllable names are made for rythmic chanting.
