When is our next 40+ game?

I was thinking recently how different the team is starting to look. A lot more measured. Less ad-lib. For years we were the Entertainers, but we'd fall short of the semi's.

Don't get me wrong. If it means winning more games, I'll sign up. But with all these nailbiters we've had this year, I just wish we'd give someone a good old spanking.

A quick tally of our 40 & 50 point effort over the years.

2005
40+ 3 times
50+ 1 time

2006
40+ 2 times
50+ 1 time

2007
40+ 1 time
50+ 1 time

2008
40+ 1 time
50+ 1 time

2009
40+ 1 time
50+ 2 times

2010
40+ 1 time
50+ 1 time

2011
40+ 1 time
50+ nil

2012
40+ nil
50+ nil

i think its worth mentioning the 30 - 0 effort the boys put up the first time for the club, that is noteworthy already for 2012 and there will surely be a cricket score coming up soon. When do we play the knights?

Interesting stats. I sort of feel like we have had more 40+ games in the last few years then the records suggest.

I guess there must be a whole heap of 30+ games.

When we get some speed in the backline

I think that this is our no 1 problem at the moment however the slow wingers are also a big part of getting us good go forward.

We have not been good at smashing teams for some time now. It hasn't seemed like the team was mentally strong enough to go on with a good lead. Look at the Parra game.

Hopefully this is the start of a mentally tougher squad, and Chris Lawrence will hit form again this weekend…

Lote isn't slow when moving forward at all. He'd still spank a very large amount of the NRL wingers in a straight line. It's just turning that makes him look like a snail. Utai is slow as a wet week but he's a battering ram winger and there is a place for them. Our centres aren't really slow at all, Lawrence would be one of the fastest centres in the comp still and none of us have seen him in space this season to really confirm if he's lost much speed. Ayshford is deceptively quick but of course, is no speed machine. Moltzen is lighting fast. I'd say our backline isn't exactly slow. Probably among the slowest in the comp but not so slow that it's really to our detriment and when line breaks are made Moltzen is making a good habit of getting back in time to cover them when our wingers aren't capable of it. Sacrificing the skill level and other pros that our backline provides for a little speed might not be the best thing if some of the clubs with quicker backlines are anything to go by.

I think it should also be considered that our outside backs have probably the most difficult halfback in the NRL to play alongside in that he puts his backs under pressure a lot and expects plenty out of them. The guys that are there have proven themselves to be able to link effectively with Marshall over an extended period and I'd say that is far more important to our team that a slight increase in speed.

What an excellent post, well said MacDougall!

I don't buy into smashing the crap out of a team, it says more about the opposition than it says about you.

Certainly does. Our three most recent wins were against teams who gave a fairly solid display. The Titans should have beat us, the Warriors had the stock but failed to capitalise on our frail fringes and the Cowboys failed to take all of their chances. These three games have by and far been our best and we appear to improve every week. I'd like us to smack every team by 40 for the rest of the year, but is more rewarding to be tested by a team who is struggling from time to time, it lets the boys know there's no certainties in Rugby League.

It will become more likely as the team continues to gel.
We are seeing it already.

Think back, most of our big wins have happened in the back half of the year
