Which team will get the 18th Franchise

Have to say with the expansion competition for off contract NRL standard players will be intense as well as much more opportunities for those fringe players and lower level players to jump at a chance whether ready / capable at the time.

Yeah it will be perfect for the young players just developing and ready for first grade.. .. No family or real commitments. Like the ones we are providing... . Just worry about themselves and counting their coin

Will also shake up existing thoughts of letvthem have another year or two to develop. Clubs will be preying on the lower comps of big junior areas even more than now. Watch out WT, Penrith and Parra.

I don’t understand this type of of thought process . The Swans and lions in the AFL have huge subsidies for interstate players . The tax incentives will just be another variant of the same
Logic .
To imply that that team will have some kind of leg up is ridiculous! They’re going to be like the Tampa Bay Rays of the NRL. One good season where they compete for a title followed by a whole bunch where they’re middling or down the bottom .
They will have to hire the smartest operators in the game , build building a future for them will never be more than a 2-3 year window at any given time.
I’m more worried about them coming last every year .
You may begin to understand the thought process when we compete with PNG to sign a Luai. They table $1m and we need to find $1.45m. Just because other sporting clubs do it it doesn’t make it a good idea.

Don't like the dolphins
Don't like the idea of a PNG team in the NRL

Q cup, world cup, etc... great.

Would've preferred to downsize the NRL
(Goodbye Eels)

But hey, if it stops us from winning more wooden spoons, that's good.

Unlucky to the bears,
Always liked their jersey.

Everyone seems to be of the belief the PNG side will be a development club. It’s hard to see how they will be a success. Can you imagine them unearthing a superstar? Unless the kid is a local, he’s not sticking around. The only way I see players stay long term is if the NRL offer financial incentives. How else you going to keep players there?

If tax free income is to be offered to overseas players, are they to offer the same to their local players?
If not, there could be problems.

Not to mention other clubs getting their noses out of joint. It’s not worth the hassle imo. The game will always be huge in PNG regardless. But the NRL look like they have their heart set. And the poor old Bears get screwed over again. Could there be a more cursed club?

They're a nation of 10 million, they will find plenty of local talent - especially now that they have money.

There are thousands of Aussie workers who live in PNG right now - in mining, healthcare, aid, policing, forestry - and they do it on much smaller salaries than the footy players will get.
Yeah, the working class. I doubt they have the lifestyle of guys in their twenties making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year

Will mostly be local players, but with the tax incentives they'll have some Aussies.

Older players with families will get one final massive pay day. May even leave the fam behind.

Younger players will come over for a pay day and NRL experience, plus will live like a billionaire in the compound.

I imagine the compound will be like a mini city/5 star resort.

Mansions for every player, restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, bars and unlimited adult entertainment.

Can def's see players going over for a year or two for that. But doubt many long term contracts.

I suspect the Australians they would be targeting would be young and not yet earning hundreds of thousands, or those towards the end of their footy career looking for one more big contract to see them out. Klemmer type players who know the end is on the horizon. But I assume they will be looking for the majority of the squad to be locals, there is some quality talent in the current Hunters squad.

They can also look to sign talent in places like Fiji where people might not have the same spoiled princess expectations about lifestyle.

Does anyone feel outraged the OUR tax dollars are being wasted

"PNG has been gifted a licence to enter into the comp after backing, to the tune of $600 million across the span of a decade, was pledged by the Australia government towards it."

FFS how much good that could have done for Australian taxpayers - especially those that have no interest in the NRL!

This country has always had a fetish for prioritising sport over more important things.

100% it's political, and it's to do with China

well we spend $2 billion annually on Pacific Aid projects, this falls under that category and is a drop in the ocean by comparison.

throw in the need to keep China's eyes at bay and it may well prove a bargain.
