Which team will get the 18th Franchise

How is china threatening aussie? They are your 2nd biggest trading partner.
What have they done or threatened?
Nothing yet but we are getting prepared . PNG is a perfect stepping stone from Asia to Oz so strategically important.
Japanese tried it in WW2 but we kept them out.
Albo is playing a double edged sword by offering financial support, but indirectly through sport, which is very close to their heart. It’s all part of a Pacific initiative to shore up all the islands.

It is a very solid political move because it will bring closer ties to our nearest neighbour (where Rugby League is the national sport) and keep China firmly at a distance from our shores.

And never will. The point is all that money they could use here. Rather than a compound segregated from the general population.

I think it’s something like 60% of the tax we pay is to Centrelink . Hundreds of billions of dollars .
600m is a drop in the ocean, and would likely come out of the defence budget , or allocated funds .
The hyperbole like “ that money should be better spent elsewhere” is rhetoric spun by morons during peacetime , because they’ve forgotten or never knew what invasion or war would mean .
IMO if it only costs 600m to shore up our northern border and limit the gateway into the rest of the country , then that’s a bargain .

Well. You are not a moron. You got your shite together. And you are right. Freedom comes at a price. Suffering for the majority. Exclusivity for the few.

$60 mill a year isn't much is it. When you consider we give them $600mill a year in foreign aid then this makes sense.
I'm not sure it's a good move by the NRL though.

I think it’s going to be a hard sell convincing players to live there. Unless they are planning to be based in far North Qld as has been floated. Not sure the point of that if that’s what happens. Maybe it will be just be a side filled predominantly of PNG players, which in that case they would be perennial wooden spooners. Big challenge to make it a success.

We are a sitting duck with our resources. Minerals, water, farmland, relatively pristine environment, space. Small military and a pushover population. Their politics is not a 4 yr cycle. It’s a 200 yr plan.

They’ve been peacefully aquiring all the above for decades and gradually buying the pacific islands. At some point they may take what they need. Who knows if USA will or be able defend us again.

Don’t forget the tax incentives they are supposedly offering players to live there. Lol.
I travelled to/from PNG on business for over 25 years and no amount of incentive would get me to live there full time !!!

The only thing I can think of is some airlie beach type resort . Even then though … that would get old quick .
I don’t think during the season it’s going to be much of an issue as half the rounds you’re travelling to away games anyway , but pre- season ? October to march . That’s going to be a rough a sell . Especially during the build up and wet season .

I don’t see the regular season being any different to the off season. You’re still living there. I doubt players will see the appeal moving from Vaucluse and Double Bay to Port Moresby.

It will take time but if they start the infrastructure now with the funding (academy’s + centre of excellence + good training grounds +talent, coaching systems) PNGs has a population 10.5 Million with very little competition from other codes. N.Z has a population of 5mill with Rugby Union, soccer, cricket ect for the talent be divided between. I know PNG is a very different social demographic ect. But Rugby League is ingrained as the major sport. For any long term success..They’ll need to have the majority of the squad as developed local talent.

They won’t be the people attracted . It will be the young single guy looking for an adventure , the turnover will be enormous . I can’t see too many people signing any longer than 2 year deals .
It’s going to be near impossible to build a sustainable spine .
But in saying all that , people will be attracted to the idea of a never ending working holiday .
They’re going to have to put the community on a beach obviously , and make the obvious security issues , so invisible that families will be able to relax . That will be extremely difficult .
But in saying all that , gated communities arnt exactly isolated to Port Moreseby , nor is that level of crime . Johannesburg for example , a huge chunk of people live in gated communities , with very similar crime rates.
The idea of 2-3 years tax free on a million , living in a tropical paradise with an added sense of danger , to me , shen I was 21 , that would of been my dream scenario .
It’s a big reason what attracts people to the army .minus the money of course …

I’d like to see WT players getting some income tax incentives.
I don’t understand this type of of thought process . The Swans and lions in the AFL have huge subsidies for interstate players . The tax incentives will just be another variant of the same
Logic .
To imply that that team will have some kind of leg up is ridiculous! They’re going to be like the Tampa Bay Rays of the NRL. One good season where they compete for a title followed by a whole bunch where they’re middling or down the bottom .
They will have to hire the smartest operators in the game , build building a future for them will never be more than a 2-3 year window at any given time.
I’m more worried about them coming last every year .
