Okay, first thing. Potter is not the problem. I will defend our coach right from the top. As frustrating as things are right now, and it's easy to go looking for scapegoats for our struggles, but Potter is NOT the reason for our struggles. At full strength most experts had us finishing around 12th this season. I thought that was a fair reflection with a spot on the edge of the top 8 an outside chance. Put simply, we have two top shelf players. Farah and Marshall. And currently Marshall is out of sorts. Woods has been in better form that anyone but after that we've had nothing. Our next best player has probably been Buchanan. I never expected top form this year. This year was always down year as we rebuild from the loss of Ellis, Heghington and Ryan (all who were not replaced adequately).
There are simple reasons for our struggles. Injuries have torn us apart this season, yes. Beyond that though the rebuild is essentially the problem for us. Look at the average age of the team last night. I think it was around 22 before Benji returned. Look at the state cup squad, same thing, 22 years old. Basically our entire club's senior roster has an average of around 22\. That's so young! As it also stands, Tedesco and Sironen form part of our crucial spine. The club just isn't set up to be able to absorb the current injury toll. That's no one's fault. The club wanted to focus on youth development and they're entitled to do that.
What has disappointed me though has been the performance from the senior players. In particular Utai, Blair, Marshall and Lawrence. We expect better and deserve better. I don't know weather it's the pressure of having all this inexperience around but these guys are out of form and guilty of a lot of our worst football this season. That frustrates me no end because they're the leaders of the side even more so due to the inexperience around them. They need to be playing better football. The young can't be expected to carry the load.
From Potter's point of view this has thrown up like a sick sick kid. The above has been coupled with Potter trying to change a flawed defensive structure that many of these players had spent 4-8, some even 10 years playing under. It's basically all gone wrong the club this season.
