Unbelievable overs they are paying. It's the advantage of playing at a club with that many top shelf players, they make you look much better than you are.

this guy is all the goods.. with drink water they will have a good half and widdop can be a great 5/8 of fullback.. wherever they need him.

looking forward to him bringing his x factor at a team like deagons. he could really brighten up their attack

i think you dont see his potential because he is forced to take a backseat to billy and cronk.

he has a killer running game… agree to disagree here but he does have what it takes to be a good fullback or even a 5/8

My running game would be killer if I had Slater and Cronk as options around me.
He's as good as he is going to get and certainly isn't a half million a year player.
"Good" fullbacks and 5/8s don't get a half million to turn up. Excellent ones do.

i dont look at the figures… they are usually juiced up quite a bit. even if they arent, i dont like judging a player by what he's getting paid.

look at his performances during origin time when the others are missing.. he is as good, if not better than josh reynolds, without the silliness.

as i said, he takes a backseat to them, never gets his turn to do what he can.. he will be able to do it from fullback 100%

Gotta love Saints….give up one dud player to purchase another one. Widdop won't have Cronk, Billy and Smith wiping his bum for him next year.

What makes you think he will play fullback. Aren't they still in negotiations with Dugan?

As for not judging a player by what he's getting paid…well, that's how recruitment works.

You are right in a way, it is a good trade for the Drags…....Widdop is a slightly less worse player than Soward so it is a step up for them.

You could also make an argument that he rides off the back of the big 3\. You could probably put anyone in the middle of those 3 and look like a star

I have to say I agree with both sides. The big three at Melbourne made Brett Finch look great. That said, I do believe Widdop is a great player in his own right and given the purported figures that Penriff are going to pay Soward, the Saints definitely had a win there, picked up a good player at a much reduced cost. The signing the Saints fans should be worried about is Rangi Chase.

Especially when he comes up against "cuz" Isaac Luke the leg breaker.

i meant as a fan.. who doesnt believe whatever rubbish number the media puts forward

i said his best position would be fullback but he would work very well at 5/8 as well.

believe it or not, widdop will be dragons' most attacking player next year.

yeh true.. but that's not the case. as i said, watch him during origin time, or playing for england.

great footwork, OK passing game, speed, strength, accelaration and courage… he has it all.

the only thing im not sure of is if he can do it week in week out consistently.. giving 100% as he hasnt had to do that for melbourne. it's a challenge for him but i think he will succeed.

He is an ideal supporting player for a superstar in my opinion. He is good at all parts of the game, consistent and will turn up and give a quality turn out each week, but doesn't have the next level to be a game breaker by himself like a thurston, inglis, slater etc. He could end up a good signing if they can bring someone in with that x factor for when the 1percenters aren't enough.

Either way an improvement over soward, but more than I'd pay.

Melbourne's big 3 should always have been their big 4\. Widdop is an amazing player and IMO in the top 3 five-eights in the game. Great pick up by the Dragons. I also rate their hooker Mitch Rein very highly, so given Widdop is 24 and Rein 22, they could definitely build a good spine around those guys for a long time.
