Willie Mason [Discussion]

Just because the DH's at the DT say it isn't happeneing means nothing

But you can understand why sponsors and officials could be concerned about signing him

If true I feel very sorry for Willie Mason. If you read this Willie I apologise on behalf of our board because most of us with half a brain wanted you and they are clearly soft cocks with no [This word has been automatically removed]ing idea. You certainly don't deserve to be strung along and then rejected because of some overblown bad boy image that doesn't even compare to some of the other superstars in the game.

Who's worse, Carney or Mason? If you say Mason you have NFI.

I am ashamed of our club. I am considering voiding 2012 from memory because the first four weeks of this season so far have just been beyond disappointing. Holy shit this is like a bad dream.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Whether you like Mason or not (I don't) it is Humphrey's job to make tough calls.

To let this drag on for weeks….............and then not sign him as a few people were against it. This bloke is an AMATEUR as an NRL CEO.

Why didn't he canvass opinion behind closed doors weeks ago? Why let it drag on? Why not make a decision one way or the other and then announce something and be strong about it?

Humphrey's should have been sacked after the mess with Gibbs and co.

This time he should just walk. He's got no idea how to manage these things.

Mason to Tigers deal unlikely to go ahead

WILLIE MASON'S future is again in doubt after talks between Wests Tigers and the unsigned forward appeared to collapse.
While the Tigers had been the first NRL club to officially express an interest in the former Test and State of Origin representative, the Herald understands the club is now highly unlikely to offer Mason a deal for this season, and are set to officially end their brief courtship today.
While discussions continued yesterday, it is believed Tigers officials will baulk at offering Mason, who has returned to Australia following a stint with French rugby union, a lifeline after assessing the backlash and also examining the salary-cap repercussions.

While some, including Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy, supported Mason's return, many Tigers fans had vented their opposition to any deal.
Other factors are at play, however. It is believed that Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys had spoken with salary cap auditor Ian Schubert about the potential acquisition of Mason, which revealed some stumbling blocks. Humphreys maintained talks were ongoing but appeared to play down Mason's chances.
''I've met with Sam [Ayoub, who is negotiating on behalf of Mason] and I've met Willie, but I'd describe those talks as exploratory,'' Humphreys said last night. ''I said we'd have a think about it and that's what we're doing.
''I know other people have said we've signed him or we're not going to sign him, but it was just an exploratory conversation. We were just having a think.
''We agreed to have another chat in the morning.''
Ayoub said: ''It's still where it was three weeks ago when they first met with him. Others are implying that he's there; others are implying that he's not there.'' Asked whether talks had broken down, Ayoub said: ''It's probably a question you should put to the Tigers.''

Humphreys will make up some press release about it being "for cap reasons"…............just you watch.

He won't man up and say "no, i didn't want him" or "yeah, i made the call to sign him".

Just be up front for once......................really getting tired of our CEO treating us all as morons who can't see through his PR spins. He's like a politician.

the one thing i would believe is cap issues.
look at our record.
cap breaches every year.while minor over the years,we still commit them every year.

I would have thought the money big Willie would have been offered would have been about the same if not less than what mitch Brown was on. So if that is the case than surely the cap could not be offered for as a excuse. Than again maybe our ceo was telling porkies when he said they let Mitch go because he was such a nice kid and in fact it was done to get rid of a major cap problem.

I get the feeling the place is in a little turmoil at present and with the great expectations of 2012 starting to look just a little shaky early panic is settling in.

From what I've been told willy is willing to accept a min contract for the remainder of this year but have an increased salary for next year. Prob is tigers are baulking at a 2 year deal. I can understand both sides of the argument but to get mason on a 2 year deal for around the 250k IMO is worth it. This whole sponsorship and fan out cry is not a legit reason as to why they are baulking at it.it's the fact he wants 2 years

That I'd believe. Does anyone else think maybe the medical might have caused a drama as well?

I dont like Mason BUT i hope we sign him & havent left him high & dry, We are struggling in the front row @ the moment with no Galloway & he could help the young blokes, so lets sign him.

I'm guessing that the media are suggesting this because an announcement was supposed to be done yesterday. IMO it will be sorted today one way or another. Ayoub has another meeting with humphreys and sheens this morning. And sheens runs this club so if he wants him he will be here

No I'm saying he is willing to play this season for a min contract like around 60-70k then be back loaded second year for around 180k. Tigers are baulking at the second year so if that's the case ayoub is tying to barter a better deal for this season.. His original offer was 120k this year with a second year option in the clubs favor.. They don't want that in the clubs favor which is understandable given his age and so on
