Willie Mason [Discussion]

Just heard they have gone cold and Phil Gould wants him at Penrith - hope they change their mind in their meeting this morning

Bad choice IMO for 110 a season. Hopefully this means we're hoping on a cronk or dce or Manu

So just to confirm.

People were ringing up about this and complaining but in the past we have kept folk of highly dubious moral character because they were already here?

Top work Wests Tigers

I just hope by not taking him hasn't opened pandoras box . If the reason was because of the fans that's pretty sad cause if that was the case there would be major changes everywhere else in the club ie: coach and certain players getting dumped . In our short history we as a club have also had some off field dramas with the mcguiness & field drug scandel , the laffranchi incident , Lui's shananigans . I just hope it was for a good reason cause I thought he would have given us some extra strike power and I'd Gus Gould wants him there can't be to much wrong with him .

Willie can resume his dislike for WT now. He'll be looking to play at his best next time we meet.

I can see how he may have been of benefit but maybe it will be a short term pain for long term gain. I'm not sorry he isn't coming.

He looked fit training with fabri,he would be of great use to us,short sighted fans must not want to win games,Mason was a no brainer, low cost and trying to prove his critics wrong all the while filling a whole we can't fill at present.

I would really like to know who made this decision . In my opinion I believe the only people who should make the decision would be coach , senior group , and the CEO

The Wests Tigers are expected to announce on Thursday that their brief pursuit of former NRL forward Willie Mason has ended.

The Tigers were believed to be keen on the former Test back-rower to boost their thin front-row rotation - which has been hit heavily by a toe injury to NSW representative Keith Galloway.

That followed the departure of front-row specialists Bryce Gibbs and Andrew Fifita to Cronulla in the off-season, leaving inexperienced duo Aaron Woods and Matt Groat to carry the load this season.

Back-to-back losses to Manly and St George Illawarra, in which the Tigers were outmuscled up front on both occasions, looked to have fast-tracked the deal, but the club went cold on the 31-year-old.

"I can't (give an update on Mason), Stephen Humphreys will make a statement about it (on Thursday)," Sheens said on Thursday morning.

"I think we're leaving it in his hands to do that."

Sheens confirmed that Mason had been courted by the Tigers to improve his forward pack, especially while Galloway remains sidelined for up to another month.

"We've made an enquiry about a number of players just to improve our front-row stock at this stage of the season," he said.

Lock Chris Heighington said Mason would be a good signing for any club, but that the Tigers were well represented in the forwards regardless of any future signings.

"It's up to club management (what happens with Mason), but in saying that we've two really good props in Woods and Groat coming through who are going to be really talented players," Heighington said.

"That's up to the club but in saying that he'd be a really good signing.

"He's a good player and he's done it at the top level."

Looks like Mason is out but I wonder who else management is talking to, "We've made an enquiry about a number of players just to improve our front-row stock at this stage of the season," he said.

Smoking Gun always seems to be on the mark with his info. The problem appears to be the 2nd year of this deal. Not fans and sponsor issues. His signing would put 1500-2000 people more through the gates on his debut.

You have to admit this whole saga has been played out really poorly.
After the fiasco with Moltzen , the unhappy departures of Gibbs and Fifita ,Brown (suddenly) and talk last year that Heighington , Fulton and Ryan were also told to look around we look like we haven't got a clue who we do or don't want.
Maybe Bug has been right all along. 😱pen_mouth:

Shrek runs over Gibbs , Mason starts his spray. Fans fighting in the stands , I have never liked the bulldogs or any of their players and this guy is a serial pest , I say NO. We can start giving our juniors some experience for next season , one game at a time. I am with Tommy on this one.

You obviously didn't live anywhere near Lidcombe when Tommy was playing!
Calling Mason nothing but trouble when you consider the stuff he and others in his team got up to on the grog is really stretching it.
Everyone would duck for cover whenever those guys walked into a pub or club

You, like most people, tend to repeat the stories heard third hand in and around the pubs in Lidcombe.
If you had been there, and knew the players you would realize there was a level of self respect within the club and the player group.
There was a time to have fun and a time to play footy. This was an era when most if not all of the players had full time jobs.
Yes they enjoyed themselves around the local area. Now its seems local support and commitment depends on where your next contract is coming from. Oh, and the obligation to be constantly seen in the Eastern Suburbs. If you can name one player from that era that was considered a thug off the field you simply did not know them.
Well done for having common sense Tigers.
We don't need a serial pest who still refuses to admit he is in the wrong.
Of all the clubs in the NRL, when you watch a tigers game you know it will be clean, quick and entertaining. You know you won't get constant bending of the rules or a constant questioning of the referees decisions.
It why we are criticized as often as we are. We may not win all the games. We may not be the best, but when we play on the edge of our ability we are unbearable.
Move on Willie. Good luck.

in my opinion theres more to it… every time he speaks with a club there is always a drama and they all pull out... yeah he was caught pissing ona wall but there has to be more to it... if he only wants 25k - 50k for 1 season and only one club wanted himand then pulls out last minut theres got to be more...ive heard more rumours about him at the roosters days but still... hes married under the thumb now and in his early 30's hes not going to be the party boy he once was!! just signt he bloke HE WANTS TO PROVE THE POINT, LET HIM PROVE IT FOR PEANUTS.... it will be another marketing tool to benefit the tigers IMO if he was used POSITIVELY!! the board are an absolute joke!!!!
